Community Outreach - OCSPCS / Public Health

OCSPS Outreach

Our Promotora outreach were able to connect with the Latinx community throughout the San Luis Obispo County with the support of a grant received via the Office of Communication and Strategic Communications (OCSPC) to share and speak on educational material regarding topics such as, extreme heat, vaccination for all, and information on how to obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).

Our Promotoras strategically chose their outreach locations to maximize their chances of connecting with those in the community who need to be connected to resources. Our Promotoras conducted outreach in food markets, bakeries, foodbanks, parks and radio interviews with the goal to meet the community where they are at. On average our Promotoras were able to connect with a total of 1,000 community members a month. In total we were able to connect with 12,500 community members.

Public Health - Focus Groups

Our collaboration has created a safety net for our community. We created a team that overpassed our partnership to hold a different number of focus groups around our county and learn more about the needs of those more vulnerable in our community.

The focus groups gave Mixteco and Spanish speaking people a way to express their necessities regarding their health and other areas in their life that add up to their overall wellbeing.

Collaborating with Public Health has allowed us to reach the most vulnerable communities and provide them with free vaccines, Covid-19 tests, and information on access locations to acquire these services. Likewise, being able to provide information on places where they can access Cancer exams and other preventive services.

Collaborating with public health has been an important impact to our Spanish and Mixteco community because they had expressed the importance of communicating in their own native language, that way there is no doubt about the information they are receiving.
