THE ADVOCATE
From the Front Lines of the Fight to Eradicate Homelessness
| |
Since the beginnings of January, Austin Street Center has served over 1,500 unique individuals, offering comprehensive wraparound services to end homeless experiences as quickly and permanently as possible. But did you know that we’ve also assisted thousands of others outside of our shelter?
We’ve done this by:
- Offering nearly 26,000 rides on our Connector bus this year
- Successfully diverting 54 individuals away from shelter services (read more about this program below!)
Needless to say, our small but mighty team is working tirelessly to transform lives and restore hope to the homeless, and the number of people we serve is rapidly increasing. Please help us stay afloat by getting involved in any of the below ways:
-
Attend our Humble Beginnings Luncheon on Friday, October 11. Event details below or purchase tickets here.
-
Solidify your volunteer plans before the busy fall season begins. Serve a meal, organize our donation room, etc. To sign up, email asc.volunteers@austinstreet.org.
-
Donate items for our clients who desperately seek necessities we often take for granted such as soap, underwear, and blankets – details here.
It takes a community to break the cycle of homelessness and we couldn’t do this without you all.
Forever grateful,

Diana R., was a client of Austin Street Center’s Sisterhood Program which addresses the unique needs of women experiencing homelessness who also face traumatic barriers.
Prior to Austin Street, Diana lived in Dallas and had been sober for 11 years, but she became addicted to gambling and couldn't pay her rent which led to an eviction from her home. At age 74, Diana was brought to Sisterhood by a friend who knew she needed help.
By living at Sisterhood for a year and a half, Diana received free room, board, and food, and leaned on her licensed counselor who helped get to the root of her issues. Through the program, she eventually saved enough money to obtain an apartment and felt financially stable.
Although Diana no longer lives at Sisterhood, she continues to visit weekly as a part of after care and looks forward to her uplifting visits. She is thankful for the staff that have listened and taught her patience, and is grateful to have the tools needed to succeed in the outside world.

In April 2024, our Diversion Team expanded and is now designed to help individuals discover, access, and gather their resources to end their homelessness as quickly as possible.
Our emergency shelter best serves vulnerable individuals without an ID, income, or stable relationships. There are other circumstances where neighbors have fallen into hard times and need assistance, and our Diversion Team supports these individuals by finding them safe living options outside of the shelter.
Our team can help with:
-
Transportation Assistance to a housing situation, whether nearby or further away
-
Rental Assistance of up to three months for qualified clients to ease the transition into a rental property.
-
Housing - Focused Rehabilitation or Detoxification Services
-
Locating shared housing or boarding, group, and sober living home options
So far, our team has successfully diverted 54 individuals away from shelter this year to date!
