Tuesday Information and Education – What we know about leadership can help us recognize effective or ineffective leadership and also help us understand what to expect from leadership when we need it. We can identify a few tentative conclusions about leadership effectiveness, using a widely recognized historical example: the man who is consistently rated by historians and the general public as the greatest presidential leader in American history: Abraham Lincoln. It's useful to point out that “effectiveness” itself should be distinguished from “efficiency.” The essential difference is that efficiency is about doing things the right way with the lowest possible cost, while effectiveness is about doing the right thing in the first place. Efficiency is largely about money and resources; effectiveness is largely about ultimate impacts on people. Efficiency is what managers focus on; effectiveness is what leaders aim for.
