Friday, December 30, 2022: Twice a week we bring you informational, educational, inspirational, and entertaining messages. This edition showcases the following topics:

  • Friday Inspiration and Fun – Today we want to call attention to one of our favorite books:  Learned Optimism, by Martin Seligman, founder of the Positive Psychology Movement and Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Seligman was researching the phenomenon of “learned helplessness,” wherein patients have virtually no self-confidence and believe they are essentially worthless. Seligman discovered that most of those patients were simply talking themselves into a state of learned helplessness by repeating over and over the belief that they could never do what many other people do. Seligman eventually realized that many of those patients were able to overcome their learned helplessness simply by recognizing it and telling themselves repeatedly that they can actually do what they previously believed they could not do. In discussing his book with his editor, the editor suggested that the subject of the book was not really learned helplessness, but “learned optimism.” That title change reversed the impact of the whole book and launched Seligman on a career of leadership within the profession of psychology.

  • Coming Up on Tuesday – Information and education.
