Our Circadian Clock

Align with nature's rhythm

"Our bodies are finely tuned to the rhythms of the Earth, following a natural cycle of light and darkness."

The circadian rhythm is the heartbeat of our biological clock, guiding us through the balance of rest and wakefulness, reminding us that we, too, are a part of nature’s rhythm.

For those who have attended my Whole Health classes, you know how I emphasize the importance of rhythms and rituals. Our bodies thrive when we engage in mindful, consistent self-care, which soothes and safeguards our nervous system—benefitting our physical and mental well-being.

Think of rhythms and rituals as your sacred guidelines for a healthy, happy life. Even simple adjustments can bring a profound sense of balance and harmony.

Our circadian rhythms play a critical role in regulating cell function and various body processes, including immune health, digestion, metabolism, and hormone balance.

Essentially, our circadian rhythm is our biological timekeeper!

When this rhythm is disrupted—by night-shift work, artificial light exposure, frequent travel across time zones, or even daylight saving time (DST)—it can lead to issues like insomnia, low productivity, mood disruptions, and even more serious conditions like diabetes. DST, for example, alters our exposure to light, which is a primary cue for our body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.

Key hormones, like melatonin and cortisol, are also regulated by the circadian rhythm. Melatonin promotes sleep and is released more at night, while cortisol, which boosts alertness, is more prevalent in the morning.

Harmonizing habits for your body clock.

Establish a routine: Start slow, gradually aligning your daily schedule. Consistency with daytime and evening activities reinforces your body’s natural rhythm.

Get daily sunlight: Spend time outside and expose your eyes to morning light, boosting alertness.

Limit screens before bed: Reduce screen time before sleep, as blue light can disrupt melatonin release.

Avoid late naps: Skip afternoon or evening naps to promote better uninterrupted nighttime sleep.

Exercise regularly: Incorporate physical activity, ideally outdoors during the day, but avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime.

Limit caffeine and alcohol: Avoid these, especially in the evenings, as they can impact your circadian balance.

Rest after air travel: If possible, minimize frequent cross-time-zone flights to reduce rhythm disruptions.

Eat regularly: Stick to three main meals, with a focus on a hearty breakfast if needed. Try to avoid snacks for digestive stability.

Create a restful sleep environment: Make your bedroom a cool, quiet retreat with a supportive mattress.

Relax before bed: Wind down with a book or meditation to support a smooth transition to sleep.

Listen up my California fun-loving friends, here’s a body-clock-friendly reminder!

Lastly, I haven’t come across a truly standout book on circadian health to share for October’s review. If anyone has a must-read suggestion, please let me know—I’d love to check it out and possibly feature it in my next newsletter.

In the meantime, I’m including an image of this beautiful Ayurvedic circadian clock that highlights practices that support the body’s natural cycles of repair and nourishment throughout the day and night.

Feel free to email me if you would like to request a high-res .pdf of this image!
