Black History Month Student Feature: Tinah's Journey From Adversity to Aspiring Doctor
Tinah is a determined senior at Denver South High. Her family’s journey from Somalia to the United States is not just a story of resilience but a testament to the transformative power of education. 

Now, Tinah is college-bound and on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a doctor. 

Tinah's advocacy for black excellence extends beyond her personal journey; she actively promotes its importance among her peers, particularly within the Black student community. 
Last Weekend for Round 1 SchoolChoice Applications
Need weekend plans? Submit your DPS SchoolChoice application! Applications for Round 1 close on Monday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. 

SchoolChoice is for students who want or need to attend a new school for 2024-25, particularly incoming kindergarten, sixth- and ninth-grade students. All incoming ECE students, as well as incoming students who reside in an enrollment zone, must complete an application.

To apply, create an account or sign in using your Parent Portal login. Rank your schools in order of preference and submit your application before 4 p.m. Feb. 12. Results will be released late March.

National School Counselor of the Year Awards
DPS celebrates National School Counseling Week by honoring all DPS counselors for their unwavering dedication and commitment to our students. Earlier this week, DPS held its annual awards ceremony honoring school counselors who support DPS elementary, middle and high schools. 

Our Counselor of the Year Award winners will go on to compete at the state level and one counselor will represent DPS and compete at the national level. Thank you to all of our DPS school counselors! Watch our video here.
Marrero Moment on School Safety with Chief of Climate and Safety
In this special edition of the Marrero Moment in the DPS Studio, Dr. Marrero is joined by Greg Cazzell, the Chief of Climate and Safety at DPS. In response to Dr. Marrero's first question, Chief Cazzell affirms our schools are safe. Chief Cazzell also outlines ways in which the DPS community can actively contribute to maintaining the safety of our schools.

Tomorrow is Lunar New Year! Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. This year celebrates the year of the dragon, which symbolizes power, good fortune and strength. We wish all our DPS community members good fortune in the year ahead!
NACE Presents Land Acknowledgment
The Native American Culture and Education (NACE) department led the land acknowledgment during Teach for America's School Leaders of Color conference on Feb. 2.

Gwen Holmes spoke the acknowledgment in Lakota: "The DPS community acknowledges our Indigenous relatives who have lived in and cared for this ancient Land from time immemorial. We acknowledge the close relationship that Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute and Natives of other tribal Nations continue to have with the waters, plants, and all moving things that call this Land home. We pledge our respect for those enduring Indigenous connections to the place we now call Colorado."
Reminder: RSVP for the Healthy Youth and Adult Relationships: Identities, Rights and Realities Webinar
Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at noon for a youth-led training and discussion on creating healthy youth and adult relationships. Youth council members from Rise Above ColoradoYouth Pride CoalitionProviders and Teens Communicating for Health (PATCH) and Engaging Youth Expertise (EYE) for Prevention come together to discuss creating boundaries and independence between youth and their trusted adults. They will share more about broadening youth support systems, understanding the rights of young people and the difference in realities and perceptions that can help youth flourish in their growing independence.
