New Healthy Start Times for the 2023-24 School Year
Dear Team DPS,

Beginning in 2023, most DPS schools will have new bell times that align with the Board of Education’s Healthy Start Times (HST) resolution. The resolution calls for middle schools and high schools to start no earlier than 8:20 a.m. each school day to support healthy sleep habits in adolescents. To accommodate this change, elementary, middle and high school bell times need to be modified.
We know you and your family may be impacted by these updated start and end times, and encourage you to take the DPS "Your Voice/Tu Voz" survey, available beginning Monday, May 2. The survey will include questions asking how the new bell times will impact you and your family. DPS will use the information to help prioritize solutions to those impacts.

To discuss these impacts, DPS' Family and Community Engagement Team will also be holding a series of community meetings in-person and virtually beginning on Tuesday, May 3. You can find information for those meetings on the HST webpage.

Thank you again for your time and patience as we make these changes to support our students' health and success, and move toward implementing Healthy Start Times beginning in August 2023.

Catch up with Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero by following him on Instagram and Twitter, both @DrAlexMarrero!

DPS ‘Your Voice/Tu Voz’ Surveys Launch Monday, May 2
The final round of DPS "Your Voice/Tu Voz" surveys will be available May 2-13. All surveys will include additional questions about the Healthy Start Times initiative for the 2023-24 school year. An email from Superintendent Dr. Marrero with links to the current surveys will be sent to students and staff’s DPS emails -- families will receive the survey link on the same day to the primary email they have entered in Parent Portal.

Responses to the survey are important because they inform decisions on how we can better serve our DPS community. Access the results from the most recent survey here.
Celebrate Our Educators during Teacher Appreciation Week!
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week, when DPS will roll out the red carpet to say THANK YOU to our amazing educators. To help spread the cheer, we've created a variety of templates, including notecardssigns to hang in your home or car window, signs for schools (8.5″ x 11″ & 8.5″ x 14″) and a Facebook profile photo and cover photo. See these resources and more on our Teacher Appreciation webpage. Be sure to check back throughout the week for a lineup of celebrations, including student quotes and random giveaway winners. And don't forget to share how you're celebrating our teachers using #DPSLovesTeachers!

Dr. Marrero Wins Courageous Superintendent Award
Earlier this week, Dr. Alex Marrero became the Institute for Education Innovation’s (IEI) first recipient of the Courageous Superintendent Award. IEI works to build bridges between district leaders and innovation partners.

Valverde Elementary Hosts Career Day
Valverde Elementary hosted a Career Fair for their ECE through fifth-graders. The event encouraged their students that it's never too early to start thinking about their future. With the support of the Career and College Success Department and school counselor, Lisyuri Gallardo, the event hosted career speaker sessions, career activities, visits with Denver Police Department and a therapy dog, as well as a Career Parade celebration.

Thank you to all of the community participants who helped make this event a success! Check out more photos and quotes from participants here.

Bruce Randolph School Opens Hydroponic Farm to Provide Fresh Vegetables to the School and Community
Last week, Bruce Randolph School celebrated the grand opening of a hydroponic farm inside the school. This is the second school-based garden/farm at the school. Through a partnership with Teens for Food Justice and a $500,000 Healthy Foods for Denver’s Kids grant, in addition to $1.14 million in bond funds approved by Denver voters in November 2020, students are growing as much as 1,000 pounds of fresh produce every month from the indoor hydroponic farm. Attendees of the grand opening were able to enjoy food that was prepared from the first harvest.

“This is another example of how partnerships between DPS schools and local, state, and national partners can benefit both the school and our community,” said DPS Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero. “The Bruce Randolph students are learning about urban gardening while providing fruits and vegetables for the school and their surrounding community.”
Denver South Students Share Passion for STEM with Younger Scholars
This school year, Denver South students welcomed learners from Merrill Middle School and Mckinley Thatcher Elementary (MCT) into their classroom. The idea -- created by South teacher Mr. Rameesh Madourie -- brought middle schoolers to South, where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) students were able to act as their peer mentors.

On Wednesday, students from South visited Merrill Middle School to give those students free STEM kits to take home and to allow them to continue building their passion for STEM. The kits have been donated by the National Society of Black Engineers.
George Washington Patriots Win Metro State Math Day Competition
Last week, students from George Washington High School (GWHS), West High School and North High School participated in Metro State Math Day. Metro State Math Day is a competition held annually by MSU Denver where students from across Colorado and beyond compete in three competitions: algebra, geometry and engineering. These competitions differ from the pencil-to-paper competitions as they are team focused and collaborative.

GWHS students won each of the three competitions, with Team 1 winning both the Algebra and the Geometry competition, and Team 3 winning the Engineering competition (as well as placing third in the Algebra competition).

The teams representing GWHS include:

  • Team 1: Ezra Caplan, Sophia Fabian, and Maxwell Rodgers
  • Team 2: Rowan Eklund, Jack Pflugh, Storm Thomas, and Maggie Schneider
  • Team 3: Xavier Hill, Fisher Pruitt, Brady Schiff, and Nathan Tamkin

Congratulations GWHS math students!
