Winter Break Resources for the DPS Community
Dear Team DPS/DPS Community,

As we near Winter Break, I want to take this opportunity to share some important local community resources that provide support to those in need this holiday season. The holidays are a busy time for us all but it is incredibly important to take care of ourselves and our loved ones, and support those in our community who are in need. Included below are resources spanning from food banks, counseling services, hotlines, and energy assistance that will be available to our DPS community over the winter break. Please be sure to review the resources below and share them widely with those who could use the extra support.

  • DPS’ Family and Community Engagement (FACE) team has compiled a comprehensive list of meals, housing, mental health and other resources to share with students and families in English and Spanish.
  • Meals: In addition to the food banks listed in the FACE resource guide, the City and County's Office of Children Affairs is offering a free supper and/or snack at any Tasty Food site for youth (ages 5-18) across Denver during the holiday break! No registration or ID is required -- students can simply drop by and enjoy a nutritious meal! Check the schedule flier (in English and Spanish) for more information. Details on holiday schedule changes and planned holiday closures will be available on the Tasty Food website.
  • Supporting our Newcomers: Our Multilingual Education department organized a New Arrivals Toolkit supporting our new-to-country and newcomer students.

Thank you to our staff, families and community team members for the countless hours of support you have poured into our scholars and their education this semester. There is so much for us to look forward to in the new year. Until then, I wish everyone a safe and relaxing winter break!

In collaboration,

Dr. Alex Marrero
DPS Superintendent
Munroe Elementary's Resource Rally Warms Hearts Amidst Winter Chill
Earlier this week, Munroe Elementary hosted a Resource Rally that provided over 400 local families with food, books and personal hygiene products. Braving the winter chill, families and volunteers gathered at Munroe Elementary, where superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero, esteemed board members and dedicated volunteers joined forces to make the event an incredible success.

Despite the cold weather, the atmosphere at Munroe was full of warmth and generosity as families received essential resources before winter break. The event shows the significance of unity within the community and showcases the power of collaboration between staff, volunteers and district leadership.

This group of talented, tenacious and compassionate fifth grade students is supporting construction efforts for a new 2020 bond-funded ADA-accessible playground at their dual language school.

The bond funds are approved and construction will begin soon. Watch the video for an inside look at the unique design process led by the educators at DCIS Fairmont and the DPS Operations team, and supported by our community partners.

The Patrick Surtain ll Foundation
In October, the Patrick Surtain ll Foundation hosted its first “Game Plan Pitch Day” where students from George Washington High School and Manual High School competed for a $50,000 grant. This grant would be used for the first installation of Surtain’s Inspiration Room, known as the Inspiration STEAM Room, at their school.

Following the announcement of George Washington High School’s win, Surtain made the generous decision to donate $50,000 to both schools to ensure all students could benefit from his innovation.

According to an article published by NFLPA, the Inspiration STEAM Room will be equipped with, “wall graphics, 3-D printers, robotics, music recording software and equipment, coding software and other resources.”

Congratulations to all the students who competed and made receiving these grants possible!

North High School has taken mindfulness practices in stride with the help of Denver-based nonprofit organization Upstream Education. In a Chalkbeat Colorado article, students and teachers from North High detail their positive experiences with Upstream’s well-being lessons by showcasing a finger-breathing technique they use to calm their nerves.

Upstream provides middle and high school students with lessons in chunks of 10 minutes or less that teach students mindfulness, breathing techniques and even how to show themselves grace.

Upstream is now in more than 40 Denver public schools, with North High being one of the first schools to have used its programming. Read the entire article here for more insight into DPS’ Upstream experience.
