October 2020
Greetings! This month's highlight is the power of our dollars. Supporting and investing in businesses with high standards of environmental and social responsibility enables them to grow and extend their influence. By investing thoughtfully, we can avoid corporations that sell us their products but also invest in or insure the fossil fuel industry - corporations that also market to individuals like you and me. Ethical use of our dollars benefits our future and the next generations.

We make choices everyday about how and where we spend our money:
  • Some businesses uphold a higher standard of social & environmental responsibility such as those certified as B Corps.
  • We need not support corporations that directly fund fossil fuel endeavors such as pipelines Stop the Money Pipeline.
  • We can support local agriculture and farmers, reducing carbon emissions
  • We can prefer community banks over banks that invest in polluters.
  • We can invest our retirement funds responsibly event in small amounts. Find ways to invest your values at As You Sow.

You will probably discover that you are already supporting environmentally responsible businesses. Large scale support for these types of businesses can turn the tide.

ECA welcomes 2 new chapters, Oregon and Southern California, (SoCal) for a total of 13. This could not come at a better time, as we are face catastrophic climate change events throughout the country. We urge all of our members to join, or form, local ECA chapters, where grassroots action has impact.
Having been in the environmental consulting field for over 40 years, I’m beyond thrilled to be able to contribute my time and energy to such a well-run organization that advocates actions that are so urgently needed at this moment. I can’t wait to begin this new Chapter - in my life, and in many others!" ~ Richard Burke, Chapter Leader Southern California (SoCal) Chapter. Join the SoCal Chapter
“We’re so pleased to become a start-up for an Oregon Chapter of Elders Climate Action combining elders in mostly rural Lane County with those in the metro Multnomah County and especially appreciate the support given us by SAGE in Portland. We look forward to expanding our membership throughout Oregon.”

Shoe Strikes for Climate - Celebrating the Day of Global Climate Action
Get inspired and recharge your hope - watch the video slideshow from the September Shoe Strikes across the globe on the Day of Global Climate Action: from Peru to the Arctic, the US to New Delhi and beyond. We are proud of our Shoe Strikes here in the United States. Following in the School Strike Tradition started by Greta Thunberg, the Shoe Strikes are a safe way to demonstrate during the pandemic. Shoes and signs represented the hundreds of thousands who would have gathered in the streets if not for the global pandemic.

Shoe Strikes will continue on the 4th Saturday of the month through 2020.
Host a Shoe Strike in your community. It doesn't matter if its one pair of shoes or hundreds. Plan you strike here: Hosting a Shoe Strike: Getting Started Guide
What Climate Actions have you be taking? Tell us in 150 words (max) what you are most proud of: we'll share it in a future newsletter info@eldersclimateaction.org
