Welcome to the October 2025 edition of our newsletter. Read on to learn more about some of the great things happening on and off the water!

Leaving cancer behind one stroke at a time!

Our Mission: ROCCREW is committed to serving the physical and emotional needs of all cancer survivors. Through our shared rowing experience, we find a means to maintain wellness for our bodies, and courage and determination for our spirit.

We find healing on the water through the power of our commitment, and we hope to provide inspiration to all of those who face the challenges of cancer.

We are supporting people who have faced cancer or are currently under treatment by providing physical conditioning, rehabilitation, education, and camaraderie.

Come row with us!!!

Everyone is welcome to row with us! We are a crew of cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to fueling our bodies and spirits while sharing a rowing experience. Our three boats are housed at the Genesee Waterways Center (GWC) at 149 Elmwood Avenue.

There is much to be said for the relationships you make with your Learn to Row class, and the camaraderie you share with all of our fellow survivors and supporters once you join the crew.

If you are interested in rowing with us, we will have another Learn to Row class beginning October 21st. This gives you an opportunity to learn important techniques, skills, and build your strength so you are ready to row as a crew when you enter the boat. After four sessions in the tanks at Pittsford Indoor Rowing Center, you will be ready to join us for our winter workout program if you choose, and be comfortable and ready to join the crew on the water for the regular season in the spring! During the regular season (May - October) rowers can choose to row one day a week, twice, or if ready to start preparing for regattas, up to three times each week.

ROCCREW AT

THE RED WINGS GAMES!!!!

In the month of September, ROCCREW had two great opportunities to be represented once again at Innovative Field. On Wednesday, September 10th we donned the red shirts of the concession stands and manned the counter at one of the busiest locations at the field- "Homeplate". Serving burgers, hot dogs, nachos and beverages helped us earn both commission on sales and any tips received. We thank everyone who both purchased items from the stand that night and especially the generous tips we received.

We returned once again on Saturday, September 13th in our signature shirts to promote ROCCREW and invite people to consider joining us on the water. Spike stopped by- perhaps we can get him to get into the boat too! We really do mean it when we say that everyone is welcome to join us!

It's time for some more Regattas!!!

ROCCREW was well represented at the Lift Bridge Regatta in Fairport in September. We were excited to have a dedicated crew consisting of Laurie, Judy, Michele, Andrea P., Andrea M, Pam, Lida and Linda in the boat with coxswain Cam completing the course. Led by Coach Liv, our rowers preparing for regattas can often be seen on the water on Saturdays working hard to maintain crazy stroke rates for extended periods of time to complete the course. We are so proud of their accomplishments!!

At time of this publication we are preparing to have two 8-boats rowing at the Head of the Genesee Regatta on Sunday, October 12th. Rowing on our own stretch of river is a pretty big deal and we are all excited for this event!

Introducing our representatives for this year's Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts, October 17th-19th!

Our boat will race in Race 43 with the Survivor Row Network on Saturday, October 18th beginning approximately 3:40 p.m. This organization has a mission to create more opportunities for cancer survivors to row on the water in boat and indoors on ergs. We are proud to be a part of this amazing group of people and join 13 other boats in this race representing survivors of all types of cancers.

You can watch live streams on the official Head of the Charles Regatta YouTube channel and also rewatch the race later to be in awe of how awesome our crew is!

We celebrate our rowers and their accomplishments both on and off the water. Please join us in honoring Yvonne Paul as she has her journey highlighted by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester (BCCR) and her professional portrait added to the walls of their building this month. It is a special collection of women who, over the years, show the strength and resilience of survivors and the support they have received and given to members of the Coalition and the community. Thank you Yvonne for all that you do and all that you represent as a survivor!

Please read more about Yvonne and all of the women honored this year in the Breast Cancer Coalition's quarterly newsletter, available at their website bccr.org

You can also root for Yvonne and the rest of our crew as they head off to the Head of the Charles later this month!

Meet the Crew! This month we feature two more of our amazing rowers!

Noreen is one of our newest crew members, joining us in January of 2025 with our winter workouts! She had previously seen a segment on local television highlighting our crew that was heading to the Head of the Charles Regatta and was impressed that there was a group of cancer survivors who rowed locally. Being a two-time survivor, she found herself interested in joining! We thank her son for being her inspiration, having rowed in high school and college. While he rowed in rain, snow and super hot days, waking up as early as 4:00 in the morning for practice and returning in the afternoon for another practice, we hope Noreen won’t be disappointed in our evening-only practices on weekdays and one morning practice on Saturday. (Our rowers can sign up for one, two, or three days a week rowing knowing that we will cancel a practice for high heat, poor air quality, and fast flow rates.)

When not on the water, Noreen enjoys spending time with her husband of 43 years, their son, but most importantly the grandson that they are lucky to be able to babysit for. Having moved to the Rochester area after retirement, she is also looking forward to visiting local places and learning more about her new community. She is also pretty close to having visited all 50 states and all 62 NYS Counties. (Most of us would never get that trivia question correct- 62 counties!)

While one of our newer rowers, we are all thankful for Noreen’s willingness to step right up and volunteer at all of our fundraisers and awareness events!!!!

What advice would Noreen give to anyone interested in starting to row? Her answer is simple…”JOIN.”

Karen F. joined ROCCREW in 2019 with absolutely no prior rowing experience.  As a new breast cancer survivor she met another survivor through the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester (BCCR) who inspired her to give rowing a try.  Her perspective on life was shifting as a result of having cancer so she decided it was time to start saying yes to new things.  She showed up to a winter indoor practice and found a group of survivors and supporters that were eager to welcome her and teach her how to row!  We are so glad she took that leap because she is one of the most positive people in the boat!!!  Her favorite part of rowing is the community of individuals who care for and support each other.  It also allows her to exercise year round and, while in season, to be on the water finding relaxation and quiet in nature.

One of Karen’s favorite memories was during the years of COVID when the coaches found creative ways to keep the group together while also social distancing.  That included taking kayaks out for a leisurely row on the river, walks in Genesee Valley Park and zoom workouts from home.

Off the water, Karen enjoys spending time with her four wonderful adult children and husband of 36 years.  She is recently retired from nursing so you can often find her in her garden, cooking, planning her next trip for a far-away adventure, or volunteering.

What advice does Karen have for people who are interested in starting to row?  “Just say yes!  You’ll learn so much in the Learn to Row Class (LTR) and be supported each week.  You’ll love becoming stronger and more confident through rowing with friends.

BONUS: Karen is featured in the Autumn 2025 edition of the Breast Cancer Coalition Voices of the Ribbon publication, speaking about her involvement as a PALS mentor! You can find a copy at many local stores' newsstands and also at BCCR.org!
