Attend Our Final HHW Event of the Year
|
|
If you're doing some autumn cleaning to prepare for guests during the holidays, you may be using a few different chemicals to clean your house. Any leftover chemicals are considered to be Household Hazardous Waste, which should never be thrown away or recycled. To avoid ground contamination, we are offering our final HHW event of the year on October 30th, 2021 from 9am-2pm. Find us at the RRRASOC MRF (Truck Entrance) on 20875 Mapleridge Avenue in Southfield.
We will be accepting:

A Reminder on E-Waste
In honor of International E-Waste Day on October 14th, we want to remind our RRRASOC community members that e-waste is included in our list of acceptable HHW items. E-waste consists of a variety of different electronics that cannot be disposed of as part of your normal recycling routine, such as washers and dryers, TVs, computers, phones, refrigerators, and microwaves. Tossing your old or obsolete electronics into the garbage can result in some negative effects down the line, such as air, water, and soil pollution. At our HHW event on October 30th, bring your electronic waste so that it can be disposed of properly!

Sustainability Day - October 27th
|
|
Now that it's October, we're in the fourth quarter of the year! What a great time to think about and celebrate sustainability. October 27th is dedicated to rethinking our daily activities - how can we become more sustainable on our morning commutes, with our energy consumption, when cleaning out our wardrobes, or with our shopping (oh the holidays)? While our goal is to practice sustainability every day, here's a couple suggestions on how you can get started:
- Donate unwanted items to your local secondhand store (or have Simple Recycling pick up your unwanted textiles!)
- Pick a more eco-friendly way to commute to work - try a bike or carpooling
- Use a reusable water bottle and/or coffee cup
- Turn off the lights in the rooms no one is in or add timers so they shut off automatically
- When going out to eat, bring a reusable straw and a leftovers container

With the holidays approaching, you may be looking for ways to divert your holiday waste sustainably. We're here to help all of our community members make environmentally-friendly choices when it comes to hosting and attending holiday parties, spending time with family, or just making the most of the season. Read our monthly newsletters for ideas for celebrating sustainably and keep the Recycling Directory at your fingertips. The Recycling Directory provides immediate answers about whether to recycle, compost or otherwise properly dispose of various materials, including holiday waste. This handy web tool is available to RRRASOC member communities all year!

Practical, Low-Cost Ideas for Upgrading Holiday Décor
|
|
Most holiday decorations are meant to last for years, but sometimes they need sprucing up. If you're ready for something new, think about upgrading what you have by painting it, adding floral elements, or using it in an unexpected way (a pumpkin as a planter - yes!).
We encourage families to create cutouts and other decorations using paper, cardboard, and other recyclable materials. The bright colors of recyclable cartons, plastics and paper can add to the project yet still be recycled when not in use anymore. Have fun and get creative (please no glitter, sparkles, gems, etc.).
Getting creative reaps many benefits! Your décor will be appreciated in a new way, you'll extend their useful life, you'll save money, and you'll reduce waste. It's a win-win!
