Peer Mentor Corner:

Meet Carston!

Dash & Scout strives to translate skills learned into real-life experiences that are meaningful for adults with intellectual disabilities and the communities in which they live. That's why we're sharing a little more about Carson this month!

CARSTON

We are super excited to share all about our next peer mentor, Carston! We've loved having him as a participant at past Dave's Places and can't wait to see him grow his leadership skills while assisting participants in this new role!

“Carston is a valued team member at Wash Your Way RVA. He has learned many job skills such as working with customers as well as coworkers. He has become more independent when asking for time off, asking for help or simply seeing what needs to be done around him. He’s learning to understand responsibility as well as the importance and pride of having a job. He works about 12 hours a week.

Carston’s experience at Dave’s Place was wonderful. Carston is a natural helper when he is confident in his own abilities. He can be much more independent when he’s on his own so stepping away from home and experiencing daily life skills without his parents allowed him to push himself and recognize his abilities! He enjoyed the variety of house 'work' - such as the grocery store and making meals - as well as the free time mixed in!" - Cartson’s Mom

SEPTEMBER DAVE'S PLACE GRATITUDE

We're full of gratitude after another incredible weekend retreat at Dave’s Place! Our team enjoyed living and learning alongside each of our four fabulous participants. We’re so proud of each of them for expanding their independent living skills with confidence and stepping outside of their comfort zones.

Thanks to everyone who made it happen, especially our first-time peer mentor, Julie, and our top-notch teachers, Jillian, Emma, and Gaby!

Check our socials soon to learn more about our and participants during their Dave’s Place experience!

JIM'S "TEACHABLE MOMENTS"

This month, one of our most experienced D&S teachers, Jim Freedman, shares what Dave’s Place means to him. We especially love the haiku he wrote with participants Ashley and Daniel!

FAMILY FEEDBACK

“I love how the support team encourages independence but assists with tasks when needed. Also I like the variety of activities that are provided. Such a well-designed program. Keep doing what you are doing!”
