"Animals are such agreeable friends —they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms."

–George Eliot

Hi Cheryl,

On November 30, Woods is proud to participate in #GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. Woods is part of this transformation and you can be a part of it too! Your gift will provide our residents with opportunities for companionship and therapy with our barnyard friends.

Animals hold such a special place in our hearts, don’t they? It may be how cute they are, or it may be their ability to dash through life with so much enthusiasm and joy. But, it’s really the unconditional love they offer and the amazing gift of knowing when you just need someone to be there for you.

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) uses animals to help people cope with mental health or medical conditions. It has many benefits, like helping with personal and social development, increased self-esteem, improved mental health, better social skills, and increased empathy and nurturing skills. AAT can also involve caring for animals, such as feeding, grooming, and bathing them regularly.

Woods has offered equestrian therapy to its residents every summer for more than 20 years, and we’ve seen improvements in social skills and communication, and an increase in positive behavior. To be most effective, therapy sessions need to be done on a regular basis. For this reason, Woods is expanding the equestrian program to include AAT by working with Home Stretch Horse rescue. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they loaned Woods horses and small barnyard animals like mini-alpacas, goats, chickens, and rabbits. The animals provided much comfort to many of our residents during a difficult time.

Your Giving Tuesday gift will support the expansion of the AAT program, including:

  • A barn where sessions can continue throughout the cold weather months
  • An AAT Specialist to coordinate sessions with the residents
  • Feed, medical care and maintenance of the animals

The program will also enhance educational experiences for Woods’ residents and offer vocational training opportunities in learning to feed, groom and care for the animals.

Your gift to the AAT program will positively impact people with intellectual/developmental disabilities, brain injury, and complex needs in so many aspects of their lives. Please be a light for Woods by making your gift on #GIVINGTUESDAY!
