December Celebrations & Observances
It’s the last month of 2025, and in addition to celebrating the end of the year, we’re also celebrating key observances that promote inclusion and human rights for people with disabilities. There’s no better way to end the year than to recognize achievements, reflect on progress, and brainstorm ways to create a more inclusive world; read on to learn more about two observances that do just that this month.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Dec 3
December 3rd (today!) is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a celebration established by the United Nations (UN) in 1992. According to the UN, an estimated 1.3 billion people across the globe have a significant disability. Further, since many people with disabilities face social barriers like exclusion and discrimination, those with disabilities are more likely than their nondisabled peers to live in poverty and/or develop certain health conditions, like depression, asthma, and diabetes. We can work together to fight against these inequities, which is what International Day of Persons with Disabilities is all about. Learn more here.
Inclusive Schools Week: Dec 8-Dec 12
Inclusive Schools Week is an annual international observance that celebrates the work done by education professionals, parents, and students to make schools more inclusive for all children, including children with disabilities. It is also a time to work together to brainstorm and plan inclusive practices that are not already in place. Learn more here.
