Mental Hors d’oeuvres, More Geary County Tourism

Welcome to 2023. It’s a new year, with new goals and planning taking place in the Geary County Convention & Visitors Bureau office.

For those who have not met me, I’ve been in the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) world as a Director for more than 20 years. It’s the most satisfying and fulfilling industry. This industry takes a lot of creative ideas, fortitude, determination, tenacity, and just plain old grit to accomplish amazing results.

I started out as a managing editor of daily newspapers in Nebraska and then jumped into the tourism industry that I fell in love with. Since moving to Junction City over a year ago, I have met some of the kindest and most welcoming people. This community has so many amazing qualities, that all start with the people who make this county their home.

About Us

We have a total of three employees in our office including myself, Donna Price, Director; Amanda Ravenstein is our Marketing Specialist and Deputy Director. She’s the designer behind the visitors guide you see and other advertising; and our newest employee is Paige Mendoza, our Administrative Assistant and overall social media guru. She’s also the one you will see with a camera out and about taking great photos.

Tourism Economics

Currently we are working on many small and large projects. Tourism economic impact studies are beginning to come in and Geary County is doing very well.

In the most recent reports we have a 10.9 percent growth rate in tourism for Geary County. This is because of the visitors that are coming in and spending money, which is helping our local folks save $412.80 a year on taxes. We have a 14.6 percent share of the tourism market in our North Central Region and a 1.4 percent share in the State.

We will have more reports coming in the next few months and will share those numbers with the community.

Sincerely,

Donna Price

National Plan For Vacation Day will be Jan. 31st. National Plan for Vacation Day, celebrated on the last Tuesday of January, is a day to encourage Americans to plan their time off for the whole year at the start of the year—and inspire them to use those days to explore the USA.

Don’t forget Kansas’ Birthday will be Sunday Jan. 29th. Kansas was established in 1861 making the state 162 years old this year. If you have the chance do something fun such as buying a Kansas product, shopping at a local store, eating at a local restaurant, or even if you are so moved to bake a birthday cake or pie that will celebrate our great state.
