Central State University earns prestigious Carnegie research designation

Central State University has been recognized as a Research College and University in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. This designation affirms the University’s growing impact in research and scholarly activity and highlights its significant investment in research and development (R&D), with expenditures surpassing $11.1 million in fiscal year 2023. An OASIS for every student

The Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS) at Central State University is a vital resource for students, offering tutoring, academic workshops, and personalized support to ensure academic success. Navigating college in the first and second years


The transition to college can be both exciting and overwhelming for students. Recognizing the importance of a strong foundation in the early years of higher education, Central State University’s Office of First- and Second-Year Student Success (FSYSS) provides academic advising and coaching, tutoring, supplemental instruction, strategic programming, and resources to help students thrive.

2024 President's Award for Faculty Excellence

The Office of the President is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2024 President’s Awards for Faculty Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service, with an overall award in Achievement


Recipients included the following in their respective categories:  


  • Achievement — Lubna Abu-Niaaj, Ph.D.
  • Teaching — Brittany Page Brake  
  • Research — Pratibha Gupta, Ph.D.
  • Service — Katrina Swinehart-Held, Ph.D.


“Each of these awardees exemplifies the excellence that defines Central State University,” said President Morakinyo A.O. Kuti.


“Their contributions in teaching, research, and service not only elevate our Institution, but also inspire our entire campus community."

Meet the honorees

Central State University proudly honors Lubna F. Abu-Niaaj, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Microbiology, as the recipient of the 2024 President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Achievement. Dr. Abu-Niaaj’s selection for the award highlights her unwavering dedication to excellence across teaching, research, and service — three foundational pillars of academia. Inspired by her parents, she has embraced a life guided by passion and perseverance.

Central State University celebrates Katrina Swinehart-Held, Ph.D., as the recipient of the 2024 President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Service. Dr. Swinehart-Held has been an Associate Professor at CSU for seven years and was recently named Chair of the Department of Professional Education and Music. She has poured her heart into serving the campus community, using her passion to create meaningful connections.

Central State University will honor its rich history and outstanding alumni at the 138th Charter Day Convocation at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Paul Robeson Cultural and Performing Arts Center Auditorium. This annual celebration commemorates the University’s legacy of excellence and recognizes the remarkable achievements of its graduates. Read more
