Our Professional Programs:

  • In 2022, we launched our new Dance Canvas: on Film program, supporting and producing the work of emerging Dance Filmmakers. We premiered 4 films in 2022. Two of the films were selected for local and national film festivals, and Veronica Silk's film, Magic. That I Am. was nominated for Best Dance Film at the Bronzelens Film Festival. Our partnered film, Glitch: Escaping Plato's Cave, created by Thulani Vereen was selected for the City of Atlanta's ELEVATE festival this fall and screened at CODA. Special thanks to our 2020 Choreographer, Terelyn Jones, for her work on developing this program with emerging filmmakers in mind!

  • Dance Canvas held our 3rd Summer Choreographic residency in partnership with Atlanta Contemporary with final performances in September.

  • We partnered with the Aurora Theatre on a new Theater Dance "Artist-to-Artist" workshop series.

  • We were proud to be commissioned by The City of Atlanta's Office of International Affairs to perform at the 39th Annual International Consular's Ball.

  • 2022 marked a new partnership with The Home Depot Backyard to create artistic programming. In October, we presented two free "Artist-to-Artist" workshops with HDBY.

  • Dance Canvas partnered with Spelman College to commission a new work, Permutations of Humanity, by choreographer, Thulani Vereen, which was premiered at our 2022 Performance Series and then set on the dancers of Spelman Dance Theater. We also worked with Spelman's Dance Criticism class, who reviewed our performance series in March. Click to read two selected reviews

Our Youth Programs:

  • DC NEXT was invited to perform for Fulton County Arts & Culture. Students directed, choreographed and hosted a community performance and were interviewed by FCAC TV.

  • In June, we held our 2nd DC NEXT Virtual Dance on Film program. Students worked with Britt Fishel, Professor of Screendance at Bryn Mawr College and Drexel University, and produced dance films and a mini virtual film festival.

  • We continued our partnership with Terminus School of Modern Ballet on our CATALYST program, supporting career development for pre-professional Black Ballet dancers. We are thankful for the support from our mentor ballerinas: Kayla Rowser-Tazik (Nashville Ballet), Whitney Edwards (California Ballet), Jasmine Roberts (DTH/Ballethnic), Kye Cooley (Ballet West), Taylor Fikes (Atlanta Ballet/International Artist), Summer McNeill (Collage Dance Collective), Kiara Felder (Les Grands Ballet Canadiens), Delaney Washington (Dance Theatre of Harlem).
