Project Highlight:
Samsara Pilot Project
Experimenting With Technology for a Better, Safer Driver Experience
Did you know it takes drivers and office staff a combined average of more than 25 man-hours per day to fill out, submit, and perform data entry for the large volume of physical paper drivers send to our transportation team? That stack of paper can combine to 100 to 150 sheets high every day. That's a lot of time and paper! We decided to see how technology can help here by recently wrapping up a 45-day trial of a system from Samsara (www.samsara.com) with a small group of drivers. Below are a few highlights:

  • Any document - from time sheets to fuel receipts to scale tickets and more - can be completed by drivers and sent to the office in a few taps using a tablet or smartphone
  • Transportation office staff can see where assets are, how they are running, and who is in them in real time
  • Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) and vehicle diagnostic codes can be sent directly to our fleet maintenance team for handling
  • Front-facing dash cameras allow the folks in the transportation office to see what drivers see
  • DOT compliance officers can review driver logs quickly and efficiently

Based on feedback from drivers and office staff, the trial was a success. We're currently evaluating what it would take to put this type of system in place for the entire transportation team. Stay tuned!

Traffic Control
Working near traffic requires training in safe practices, alertness, common sense, and a sense of responsibility. Workers are responsible for their own safety, the safety of other workers, the safety of the driving public, and the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Always wear high visibility PPE while performing tasks or flagging in areas with traffic.
  • Create necessary traffic control plans and make sure that everyone is on the same page as to how the handling of traffic will be conducted.
  • Everyone should be aware of the plan and should provide any input they feel is important.
  • Maintaining situational awareness around heavily trafficked areas is important, and only those who have been trained to flag will be allowed to do so.
  • Avoid turning your back to traffic while performing tasks and always look both ways regardless of whether flaggers are present or not.

Winner of Fishing Trip # 2!
Congrats to Chris Delpha for winning the 1st fishing trip!
Have you watched any of the Shop Talk maintenance videos over the past few weeks? Maybe you watched Joe Casella and Dan Caputo introduce the new equipment inspection process, or perhaps you caught the quick tip daily cab routine video from Cat?

Our second winner will be drawn from the pool of employees who have watched the maintenance videos that have appeared in this newsletter over the past few weeks (Equipment Inspection Intro, Equipment Inspection Walk-Through, Quick Tip Daily Cab Routine, Clean Excavator Tracks). Your name was entered for each video you watched, so if you watched more than one, you increased your chances to win!

Chris will take the winner and their guest (guest must be age 8 or older) on his boat, share some tips and tricks that he's learned along the way, and provide a unique fishing experience to be remembered!

Watch the video below to see who won Trip #2!
Update from Chris
Tournament update

Chris finished 4th over the weekend in the Vermont Bass Federation State Team Qualifier with a 5-fish limit of smallmouth bass weighing just over 17 pounds and qualified to compete in the national semi-final event on Lake Champlain in mid-September.

If Chris finishes as the top Vermonter angler in that event (out of 6 anglers who qualified), he'll move on to the 2021 Bass Federation National Championship. Chris has been to nationals before and hopes to make it again this year!

Be sure to check the newsletter often for more updates from Chris!
