A Message From The Executive Director | | |
Dear Colleague,
The ongoing stream of cuts, executive orders and policies by the US administration continues to reverberate around the world and across the United States. Those who are the poorest and most vulnerable have been hit the hardest. In response, CUGH members have done a superb job aggregating the impact of these cuts and have provided a report (below) you can use to communicate with policymakers and the public to inform them and advocate for the reversal of these decisions. In addition, see Boston University’s online tracker that estimates that over 600,000 people have already died as a consequence of the abrupt and drastic elimination of USAID.
COP30 to address climate change is underway. In advance of this meeting we held an online symposium on Oct.14 to share how we can address the Triple Environmental Crisis. Prof. Woutrina Smith (UC Davis), Dr. Carlos Faerron (Planetary Health Alliance), and Dr. Catherine Machalaba led superb sessions with excellent speakers on how nature based solutions can address climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and improve human wellbeing. See the link below.
CUGH members also published a new definition of global health. We hope this better reflects that evolution of our sector. The humanitarian crisis in Sudan and Palestine continues and we are working to see how we can work with other organizations to halt the atrocities unfolding in these regions and enable the people to have their essential needs met.
Looking forward, please register, see and share information about our upcoming events. Some events are free and open to all.
Dec 2-4: Join colleagues from around the world for our exciting and ever popular annual Virtual Global Health Week. 16+ sessions are free and open to all. Check out the program and register on our website here. Share the link widely!

So many colleagues have lost their jobs in the global health, research and development sector. We have been trying to identify ways we can help them. We are immensely grateful to friends at the executive search firm SRI- Executive who have provided useful information and links for those searching for new employment (see below).
There is much more in our November Newsletter. Thank you for sharing it with your networks.
Take care,
Keith
