A Quarterly Newsletter

July - September 2023

We hope your summer is as potentially lively as ours—with far-reaching plans and diverse adventures. This season of the year provides unique opportunities for engaging with friends and family. It’s a season for vacations, dinners out, sessions on the patio, and backyard barbecues. We are usually more relaxed and optimistic during the months of summer. The Oshun Charitable Organization is also lively this season. We are connecting with people and partner organizations--hosting events and planning upcoming activities. We want you to know how much we appreciate you—our friends and supporters.

More than A Diagnosis

The Domino Effect

When we are faced with challenges in life, we need to understand the benefits of adapting, strategizing, and finding the inner strength to fight for recovery. We should hope to overcome; and be grateful for the lessons learned from challenging experiences.

In some instances, the result is life changing. Would you Imagine that a diagnosis of ovarian cancer could lead to homelessness?

This is the outcome of one ovarian cancer patient in Atlanta, GA. She is a working single parent of two girls. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and went through treatment as advised by her doctors. As the primary caregiver and the head of her household, while battling the disease she had to reduce her workload and eventually chose to go on short-term disability. This caused a huge change in her income and her ability to provide for her family.

While going through the ordeal she had problems paying her bills. Her biggest bill was for housing. After several months of being behind in her rent, she received an eviction notice. She tried to raise the needed funds to catch up, but the outstanding balance was insurmountable and therefore she lost the home she and her daughters shared.

Imagine fighting a chronic disease and at the same time fighting to maintain one of life’s basic necessities. Intense stress might exacerbate the debilitating effects of chemotherapy treatments and the discomforts of physical changes probable after diagnosis and during treatment.

It would be wonderful if all cancer patients were financially wealthy enough to go through treatments without overwhelming worries about other life essentials. However, that is not the case.

The Oshun Charitable Organization (OCO) has chosen to concentrate on women who are in some ways disadvantaged or are often overlooked. This demographic needs financial, compassionate, and the respectful support of actually being seen and heard. Most urgent is their need for medical equity.

Fundraising

Summer Fundraiser

From June 14- 17, 2023, OCO had a fun fundraiser, and we are pleased to have raised more than $1,000. We appreciate everyone who purchased from one of the Oshun board members as we endeavor to provide assistance to women going through a tough time. We thank everyone that donated, purchased a snack, or sent words of support. Your investment allows us to reach out to women going through an ovarian cancer diagnosis and treatment and proceeds have allowed us to continue getting the word out about our organization by hosting tables at the Teal Trot and local health fairs. You are genuinely appreciated!

Upcoming Fundraiser

We are pleased that The Transition Network (TTN) has offered to sponsor a fundraiser for OCO in honor of September’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. On October 6, 2023, OCO, in partnership with Providence Missionary Baptist Church (PMBC), will sponsor a reception and program at the church. The goal of this event is to highlight our organization’s efforts and to provide an environment to share our mission and our hopes for what the OCO organization aspires to accomplish in the future. This event is open to the public.

The Transition Network is a community of smart, capable women who enrich each other's lives. As a member-driven non-profit, they empower each other to thrive as they travel through transitions from familiar old life experiences to challenging and inspiring new ones. This organization for women over the age of 50, has been in existence for over 20 years with chapters throughout the country including one in Atlanta, GA. Board Highlight

Board secretary, Marissa Mortiboy, is passionate about eliminating health inequities and particularly about the health of Black women. She received a bachelor’s in health care management from Southern Illinois University and a master’s in public health from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Throughout her career in public health, Marissa has worked to amplify the community's voice around health concerns and share health data, focusing on inequity toward historically excluded populations. She is currently the Population Health Director with the Durham County Department of Public Health in Durham, NC.

Marissa joined the board in 2021 to honor her late aunt. Marissa is inspired by working with family members to support women facing an ovarian cancer diagnosis and raising awareness of the disease. Marissa is proud of what OCO has been able to accomplish, while still growing. She is optimistic about the organization’s success and looks forward to continuing its work.
