Welcome

Dear Ricardo and Beth,

on May 31 we wrapped up our week long Latin American Missionary Family Retreat in Brazil. What a blessing it was to be together, to worship together and learn together with most of the missionaries and their families plus Bishop Kaye Kolde and her husband Dr. Dave and Gerry and Jan Coates from FMWM headquarters.

It was also a great opportunity for all of us to meet new missionaries who are raising support - Gaby & Dalia hope to begin serving in Ecuador in about a year, and Brook, Susan and Shelli have plans to relocate to Panama (and Shelli will be doing some work with VISA in Colombia) by the end of this year...and International Missionaries Juan Carlos & Yaneth who are from Mexico serving in Paraguay. (Please click on their names to learn more about each them.)

Our theme for the retreat was "Expect Great Things from God." To do that, we focused on Learning to Listen...to God, to each other, to ourselves and to culture. It was such sweet time of deepening our relationships with God and one another.

Dr. Darrell Whiteman, a renowned Christian Anthropologist and Missiologist, was our keynote speaker. He was a former professor of several of our team members, including Ricardo. He said he appreciated getting to see his students in action!

In addition to soaking in his teaching and experience and learning from experiential activities, each family received a copy of Whiteman's book "Crossing Cultures with the Gospel." Even though between us we have a shared experience of over 320 years on the field in Latin America.... we can always learn new ways to be more effective cross-cultural witnesses!

It was also a delight to be able to include all of the missionary kids in this retreat. (They get along like cousins!) We are grateful to Wendy Lorenz and her team who led the younger group. It was also a highlight to have three of our college kids join the adults. Two of them grew up on the mission field and had a unique perspective to add to our discussions.

We were all sad that the Assistant Area Director, Thad Roller, and his family were not able to attend due to medical issues. Thad and Nikki did so much in preparing for the retreat that it was an added blow that they weren't able to participate. Please pray for Thad's continued healing and upcoming travel plans.

While we were there, the latest version of the Latin American Area magazine was released. This magazine is an excellent resource. Please click on the picture to open the magazine and then use your mouse to flip the pages and read the exciting stories of transformation! This is what God is doing as we participate with him in his restoration of Latin America. Please feel free to share this magazine with friends and church members.

Next Steps & Prayer Requests:

Many of the team have returned to the USA for a few weeks of partnership building this summer. Ricardo, Jonathan and I will be joining them as we travel to the Seattle area June 19-30 to visit a few churches and attend the Pacific North West Annual Conference. If you aren't already on our schedule, please contact us so that we can meet while we are there.

And speaking of travel, Ricardo will travel to VZ to preside over the annual meeting there. His travel dates are July 8 - 15. And though it isn't mission related, Jonathan has been invited to Japan with a friend. He will be traveling July 12 - 24. We would appreciate your prayers for both trips.

The rest of the summer will be a busy one. In addition to the trips mentioned above, we look forward to spending Father's Day with Ricardo's family and 4th of July with Beth's. Ricardo is interviewing a new Director of Operations for Impact Latin America, of which he is the Executive Director. Beth will be undergoing a minor medical procedure in early July.

Juliana sitting with the kids at VBS

Juliana remained home this summer to work and take a summer school class. Probably the highlight of her summer so far was helping with Vacation Bible School at Wilmore Free Methodist Church last week!

Thank you for being a valuable partner in our ministry...and for your friendship! Many of you have been a part of this team for all 18 years of our ministry. Others have joined the team more recently. No matter where you fall, we thank God for our every remembrance of you!

In addition to the requests throughout this letter, we would like to close with a few more personal prayer requests.

  1. Beth's brother-in-law, Craig, had heart surgery last week and is recuperating at home. Please pray for him as he recovers.
  2. Beth's cousin, Grant, welcomed a new baby into his family last week and just a couple of days later his oldest child was hospitalized and then diagnosed with diabetes. Please pray for the family as they adjust to two new norms.
  3. You may have heard that one of the Colombian presidential candidates was shot in the head on Saturday. Please pray for his healing and also for peace throughout the country as people fear a return to the insecurity of the past!
  4. A lot of people who attended the missionary retreat returned home with a bad cold. Pray for everyone's complete return to health.

May God bless you and keep you. May he make his face shine upon you and bring you peace...today and always! With love and appreciation,

Ricardo & Beth Gomez
