Our Right to Know Women's History

Dear Friends and Supporters of Women's History,

Women's History is under attack, even labeled "dead." First by Google several months go and, now, the DoD. Over these decades, Wild West Women & the NWHA have researched, published, celebrated and established the importance of Women's History. We must stand strong on preserving our legacy and honoring the women who paved this path.

On January 31, 2025, the US Department of Defense announced:

"Identity Months Dead at DoD: "

“… Going forward, DoD Components and Military Departments will not use official resources, to include man-hours, to host celebrations or events related to cultural awareness months, including National African American/Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and National American Indian Heritage Month. Service members and civilians remain permitted to attend these events in an unofficial capacity outside of duty hours Full DoD Statement

On February 12, 2025, The New York Times reported:

National Women's History Alliance Immediate Response

The National Women’s History Alliance proudly established March as National Women’s History Month, ensuring diverse women’s voices and contributions are recognized and celebrated. Since 1980, when NWHA (then the National Women’s History Project) successfully advocated for the recognition of Women’s History Week, we have been amplifying the stories of all women who shaped history.

In 1981, Congress passed a resolution officially establishing the week, with President Jimmy Carter issuing a proclamation. By 1987, NWHA’s continued efforts led Congress to expand the recognition to the entire month of March, creating the National Women’s History Month we honor today.

As we reflect on our roots, we invite you to join us in supporting, protecting, and amplifying diverse voices in history - ensuring that women’s history remains visible, valued, and celebrated for all generations.

The National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) remains committed to supporting all those who bring history and honor the stories of women to life - whether in classrooms, boardrooms, libraries, community spaces or in living rooms.

Our Right to Learn Women’s History

It is our power and inspiration

An inspiring event in Women’s History is the 1982 fight for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and the unwavering dedication of the women who championed its ratification. Among them is Zoe Nicholson, who boldly declared her willingness to sacrifice everything for the ERA.

Inspired by Doris Stevens diary, Jailed for Freedom, Zoe kept a journal while fasting for 37 days in Springfield, Illinois. The Hungry Heart, A Woman’s Fast for Justice is her firsthand account with pictures, introduction by Mary Lee Sargent and epilogue by Sonia Johnson. This historic journal offers a powerful testament to courage and commitment.

Her direct action in responding to this challenging time, Zoe made the decision to make her story available at no cost, in a format that could be read in print or any device. Hoping to inspire readers, students and activists, as well as assuring its distribution beyond the limits of retail. In addition, it will be included in high school curriculum for Women’s History classes across the country.

Wild West Women is honored and happy to support Zoe’s gift.
