Friend,

In light of the President’s recent comments about opening churches, County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s extension of the stay at home directive, and our continued discussion with Bishop Hector Monterosso and the other large Episcopal Churches in Houston, I want to send you my letter published in Thursday’s Grapevine in case you missed it. Since then, there has been a change. We have been approved to re-gather for in-person worship as early as June 14 by the Diocese of Texas.

As Episcopalians, we operate within a system of dioceses and bishops. The Bishop of Texas, Andy Doyle, is leading the congregations in the Diocese of Texas through the re-gathering process. St. John the Divine is specifically working our re-gathering process through Bishop Hector Monterosso. He has been most helpful in making sure we think through all the details to keep our congregation safe and healthy. Many of you have sent me ideas about reopening our facility, which I appreciate; however, ultimately we do not make this decision alone, but in coordination with the Diocese of Texas.

In the meantime, we are continuing with our online Sunday services, which I hope you will enjoy tomorrow, either live or at a time that works for you. Please know that the staff of St. John the Divine has worked hard to make them available to you along with many more online opportunities. You can see a list of all of these offerings here.

I plan on offering one more opportunity beginning Thursday, June 4. From 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, I will teach a Zoom class on The Book of Common Prayer, specifically looking at Morning and Evening Prayer and our Holy Eucharist service. More information is to come, and I hope you will consider joining me by signing up here. By using Zoom, you will have an opportunity to participate and ask questions.

May you enjoy your Memorial Day weekend as we remember those who gave their lives for our country and on behalf of others.

Yours in Christ,

Reagan+
