35 awarded tenure at school board meeting
In a ceremony at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, 35 faculty and administrators were awarded tenure. Supervisors of the candidates spoke highly of each. Barnard to host 9/11 memorial ceremony
9-11 Memorial
Barnard Early Childhood Center will hold its 15th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and Brick Unveiling from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday. All are invited to attend.

The ceremony will take place on the patio alongside Amy's Greenhouse, a living memorial to Amy O'Doherty, who perished at the age of 23 on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center. Amy was the daughter of Geraldine Davie, a since retired teacher at Barnard Early Childhood Center.

Four high school students named to top state ensemble
Four upperclassmen at New Rochelle High School have been selected to take part in 2016 New York State School Music Association All-State Ensemble to be held in Rochester in early December.

Annael Alvarez, a junior and a member of the NRHS Chorale, will participate in the women's chorus, and David Rubertone, a junior and part of the NRHS Chorale, will take part in the mixed chorus. Emerick Falta, a tuba player, and Lily Grantcharova, both seniors, will serve as alternates.

NRHS students are typically picked every year to showcase their talents in the very competitive NYSSMA All-State Ensemble, but the number of students selected this year is high, said Marc Schneider, supervisor of music and art at the City School District of New Rochelle.

"We are thrilled for our All-State performers and their teachers," said Schneider. "We are appreciative of all the hard work New Rochelle teachers have done to nurture them to this high level of performance. We are talking top of the top."

Every spring, several thousand students across the state learn and prepare a challenging piece of music, which they perform before a panel of judges who give them a rating. Only those who reach the highest level - between 98 and 100 out of a total score of 100 - are invited to the All-State Ensemble. Pop singer Lady Gaga participated in the 2002 All-State jazz ensemble.

Schneider will travel with the students to Rochester when they perform at the gathering Dec. 1 to Dec. 4. About 900 students from across the state are expected to participate.
Columbus Chess Club
holds summer barbecue, 'simul' party
Chess Club
Even before the start of the school year, some Columbus Elementary School students were exercising their brains.

Members of the Columbus Chess Club met Aug. 27 for their annual chess club barbecue and "simul" party. A simultaneous, or simul, is a board game in which a player of higher rank plays multiple games concurrently with several players.

The high ranking player at the Columbus barbecue was FIDE International Master Georgios Alexopoulos, who played the students at the chess simul. The children, current Columbus students and some alumni, had a fun-filled afternoon enjoying hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza and, of course, chess.

"The kids had a great time honing their skills and meeting each other," said Mark Hegenauer, a teacher who leads the chess club. "We are looking forward to having another exciting chess-filled school year."

The club has been in existence for 19 years and attracts 40 to 45 members who gather to practice three to four times a week during the school year. They typically participate in five annual tournaments. Last year, they traveled to a national competition in Nashville, and placed very well, said Hegenauer. This year they hope to do even better, he said.
STEP team auditions
today, tomorrow
STEP Team
STEP team auditions are scheduled for 3:30-6:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. tomorrow at New Rochelle High School.

What started at Albert Leonard Middle School as a middle school STEP team has now grown into a districtwide STEP program, and interested boys and girls should attend the auditions.

This school year, the district is creating two teams (one for high school and one for middle school). The middle school team will perform at elementary schools and locally (U-Knighted PRIDE [Purpose, Responsibility, Integrity, Determination, Excellence]). The high school team will compete at regional and national tournaments (PRESTIGE).

The team from last year has been invited to Silver Springs, Md., to highlight Stomp OUT Bullying's Blue Shirt Day World Day of Bullying Prevention at Francis Scott Key Middle School on Oct. 7.
