We Can't Wait to Walk with You!

There are just 4 days to go until the 13th annual Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer and we are so excited to see you at one of our in-person walking events across the country!

There’s still time to join us September 23th and 24th, so lace up your sneakers and let's walk together for bladder cancer patients across Canada.
The 2023 walk has a profound impact on Bladder Cancer Canada's mission, utilizing funds to:

  • Support Patients, Families, and caregivers: Donations help us provide comprehensive support through our website, discussion forums, our phone and email Info Line, patient education, support groups, One2One Peer Support, educational resources, events and webinars, and more.
  • Raise Awareness: Our 'See Red, See Your Doctor' campaign reaches a broader audience through various media, improving early detection and diagnosis.
  • Fund Research: We continue to fund cutting-edge research, investing over $3.1 million in bladder cancer research since 2012, advancing diagnostics and treatment.
  • CBCIS Database: We maintain funding for the world-leading Canadian Bladder Cancer Information System, aiding urologists and researchers to find improved treatments and better outcomes for patients.

Your participation in the 2023 walk contributes directly to these impactful initiatives, creating a future where bladder cancer is better understood, and treated, and, create a world where bladder cancer is just a memory.

Congratulations to Grant Recipients Working to Help Address Unmet Needs of Canadians Living with Bladder Cancer

Bladder Cancer Canada, along with EMD Serono, are excited to announce the grant recipients of the 2023 Quality Improvement Grants for patients with advanced bladder cancer.
Two of the funded projects include:
  • McGill University Health Centre - Increasing quality of life by incorporating telemedicine
  • Princess Margaret Hospital (UHN) - Improving care through a multidisciplinary model

Congratulations to the funded projects, and thank you to donors and our partners at EMD Serono for helping to support important projects to better serve the unmet needs of Canadians living with bladder cancer.
Bladder Cancer Resources are Now Accessible to More Canadians

We're thrilled to announce that Bladder Cancer Canada has taken a huge step towards inclusivity and accessibility by translating our patient guidebooks into FOUR new languages: Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish, and Chinese!

Now, even more Canadians can access vital resources in their preferred language, empowering them on their bladder cancer journey.
Thank you to our 2022 Giving Tuesday Donors, as well as our Pharma Sponsors, including Verity Pharmaceuticals, Merck and Janssen, who helped make these guidebooks accessible to more Canadians. Without their support, this project would not have been possible.

A heartfelt shoutout also goes to the amazing donors who rallied behind us during our 2022 Giving Tuesday campaign. Your generosity has made a real impact, breaking down language barriers and providing comfort and guidance to bladder cancer patients across Canada.
Your Input & Knowledge is Needed for our New Financial Resources Series!

With rising inflation, the demand for financial assistance is surging. We've received many inquiries about drug coverage, provincial programs, disability tax credits, and more.

To address this, we're creating a Financial Assistance and Resources Series with videos, 1-pagers, templates, and links, tailored for bladder cancer patients and caregivers in each province.

Your input is crucial. Do you have questions on coverage or disability application success? Are you knowledgeable in this area?

Make sure to provide your email if you would like to contribute to the production of these resources as well.

Thanks in advance!

Perioperative Chemoimmunotherapy With Durvalumab for Muscle-Invasive Urothelial Carcinoma: Primary Analysis of the Single-Arm Phase II Trial SAKK 06/17

Cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy before local treatment (i.e., resection or radical cystectomy) is the standard of care for patients with localized muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma (MIUC) of the bladder. However, even with the addition of adjuvant nivolumab (an immune checkpoint inhibitor, or ICI), outcomes for patients are still far from optimal, with 25%-50% experiencing relapse and eventual death from their disease. Several clinical trials have been done to examine whether perioperative chemoimmunotherapy with another ICI, durvalumab, can improve outcomes for patients with MIUC. In a recent study of 57 MIUC patients, researchers found that the combination of neoadjuvant durvalumab with chemotherapy, followed by adjuvant durvalumab alone, achieved significantly high rates of event-free survival (EFS; i.e., time after treatment until progression, recurrence, metastases, or death occurs) and overall survival (OS) after 2 years. EFS and OS rates at 2 years were 76% and 85%, respectively, thus pointing toward a promising future for the treatment of MIUC with chemoimmunotherapy.
