All in the Family

A Story from Hope Lutheran Church

When Brenda and Howard “Woody” Wood made the journey from Pennsylvania to Florida over ten years ago, they planned to take their time finding a new church. After all, these retired school teachers were smart and savvy. They were willing to be patient as they explored local churches to find the right fit.

The couple wanted a place where they would belong. A church where they could serve. A community of believers to join. With their son and grandchildren far away in Texas, they were hoping to make connections through a strong church family.

They assumed it would be difficult to find a church to fit all these needs. But just a few weeks after settling into The Villages, they worshipped for the first time at Hope Lutheran Church, where they connected with the preaching of Pastor Barry Hunteman and enjoyed the musical offerings of the organist. Both were solidly decided after that first visit; they did not need to look any further. Hope would be their home.

The Woods quickly became part of the Hope family. Woody and Brenda joined the choir and made many new friends through the music department. Their transition to The Villages was made easier because of the love and fellowship shared at church.

Then something incredible happened. At the first choir rehearsal after Christmas, Brenda and Woody found themselves listening to Pastor Barry explain that Hope’s previous music director had left. Pastor Barry was wondering if any choir members could fill in while leadership conducted interviews.

Brenda says, “Have you ever experienced divine intervention? I did that night. My hand went up in response to Barry’s question without me raising it!”

Right away, Brenda and Woody knew they could serve. Woody was a retired choral music director, and Brenda was a pianist with accompanist experience. They were perfect interim volunteers while Hope searched for a permanent director.

Over the course of the next few months, the Woods served Hope faithfully, organizing music files, choosing choir music, leading rehearsals, and directing. Their biggest service was the ordination of Pastor Jon-Marc MacLean.

During their time as Choir Director and Accompanist, the Woods kept in touch with their son, Ken, who was living in Texas with his family. The family discussed Hope’s search for a Music Director and the applicants who had already applied but, for various reason, had not fit the position.

Little did Brenda or Woody know that Ken, who had been a music major, had secretly applied for the position! He had been in discussions with Pastor Barry about the position, and soon after, was offered the opportunity to serve Hope. The Woods were blown away when Ken surprised them with the news.

Ken and his family lived with Brenda and Woody while their new home was being built. Brenda says, “We were thrilled! What a joy to have them close. Our grandchildren Howie and Zada were 5 and 1, respectively. Yes, it was a surprise, but a great surprise.”

Now their son has accomplished more than the Wood’s had ever imagined. Under Ken’s leadership, the Hope music department has flourished, expanding to serve all three Hope campuses and enhance all seven regular weekend worship services.

Brenda and Woody found everything they had wanted to Hope…and so much more! Hope Lutheran Church has truly become a family affair for the Woods, and the church is tremendously grateful for their service.

Despite her family’s clear influence on the success of our church, Brenda says, “I do not take credit for the music accomplishments at Hope Lutheran Church. The glory goes to God for raising my hand and showing us the path He meant for us to take. We thank you Lord.”

We hope you enjoyed this story from Hope. We will be sharing new stories to celebrate and recognize the incredible ministry being done by our church and the people who serve God through our congregation. Stay tuned for more stories delivered right to your inbox!
