Maria's Story: from Renting to Homeownership

Behind every wall raised and finishing touch completed are the four families who will soon call these homes their own. With move-in day set for early September, these future homeowners are now in the final stretch of completing their 500 hours of sweat equity, bringing the last year and a half of dedication full circle.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Maria, one of our future homeowners, who shared her story and journey to homeownership. Maria has spent years working for the County supporting families in need, and spoke about what it means to finally be so close to a place of her own: a permanent, stable home where she and her son can build their future together.

When asked what she is most looking forward to, Maria shared a simple but powerful answer: having her own washer and dryer for the first time. And a home where she and her son can put down roots and remain for years to come, without the uncertainty of rising rent.

Her story illustrates what affordable homeownership is all about: building stability, dignity, and the foundation for a brighter future.

Putting the Finishing Touches on our Homes

Exciting progress continues at our downtown Sebastopol build site as our future homeowners move closer to receiving their keys.

Over the past few months, major milestones have been reached, including interior painting, cabinet and flooring installation, garage construction, and exterior concrete work. We’ve also welcomed community volunteers and corporate groups to the build site, working alongside homeowners to help bring these homes to life. As we enter the final stretch toward completion and our Home Dedication in late August, there’s plenty more to celebrate. Click the link below to read our full progress update!

Habitat Highlights

Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County named Impact100 Sonoma Grantee!

On April 28th, Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County was honored to receive an Impact100 Sonoma 2026 grant to help relaunch our Aging in Place program, bringing critical home repairs to low-income seniors in Sonoma Valley.

This support will help older adults remain safe and independent in the homes they’ve often lived in for decades, through essential accessibility upgrades & urgent safety repairs.

With nearly one-third of Sonoma County projected to be over age 60 by 2030, the need for this work continues to grow. Read more about the grant award and our Aging in Place program below.

With interior painting recently completed at our downtown Sebastopol build site, we're excited to celebrate one of the partners who helped make it possible: Visions Quality Coatings.

Just one year after breaking ground, Blankenship Place is nearing completion, a remarkable milestone made possible by the dedication of our homeowners, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and community partners. What was once an empty lot is now a vibrant new neighborhood taking shape in downtown Sebastopol.
