Dear Relative,

We hope that this Summer Solstice has been a season of organizing, building power, and resilience ahead of the crucial times we face. In Atlanta, Black organizers have aptly coined this season as the "Summer of Resistance," and we couldn't agree more.

NDN has been hitting the ground running this summer. From Sundance, urging the DOJ to investigate the Rapid City murders, our efforts have been relentless. Our recent deployment to the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, amidst the shooting at the Trump rally, underscores the social and political shifts we navigate.

We are in a time of adversity, where the conditions for our people continue to intensify. Leonard’s parole denial, coupled with bipartisan support for the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, is deeply disheartening. The Supreme Court's laws targeting unsheltered people, the investment in cop cities, and the blatant disrespect for our tribal sovereignty while desecrating our lands.

Yet, our spirit, traditions, and the collective power of our people carry us forward. From our Action Safety training to our Know Your Rights training, NDN has been working relentlessly to ensure our people are safe. Check out how our organizers and movement partners are turning up the heat and making waves ahead of this election year.

A Message from Leonard

“I am not intending to give up. And I’m hoping none of you give up,” 79 year-old Leonard Peltier shared in a phone call with Nick Tilsen, President and CEO, after the US Parole Commission's denied Peltier’s Parole.

As Leonard fights for us, we fight for Leonard. Join us in pushing President Biden to grant Executive Clemency for our relative!

Join us for the upcoming Protecting the Black Hills from Mining Summit!

It will take all of us in this fight to protect our sacred land, water, and all living things from large-scale mining. Join us with the Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, Lakota Peoples Law Project, OST Water Sources Department, and Rapid Creek Watershed Action in this collective work to make our voices heard.

NDN LIVE | Walk Against the Illegal Transportation of Uranium on the Navajo Nation

We are on the ground in Dinétah at Cameron, AZ for the Walk Against the Illegal Transportation of Uranium on the Navajo Nation. On July 30, 2024 a uranium company named Energy Fuels hauled its materials through the Navajo Nation and was stopped and escorted off Navajo lands by the Navajo Police Department by order of Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren.

A call was made by Navajo Nation First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren and Diné organizers on August 1, 2024 to walk in opposition to the illegal transport of uranium on Navajo land at Cameron, AZ. The assertion of sovereignty on Indigenous lands by Indigenous Peoples for the protection of land, water, life, and people is a major factor in this.

Projection Training with Creative Resistance

NDN’s Creative Resistance team hosted a Light Projection Training in Rapid City, South Dakota and in the Hawaiian Kingdom. Organizers who participated in the Rapid City training practiced with a #FreeLeonardPeliter projection on the federal prison building where relatives are housed.

NDN LIVE|On the ground at the RNC

NDN journeyed to Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Miami, and Menominee lands; or so-called Milwaukee to provide media coverage at the RNC and to elevate the work of our Native and Black comrades.

The City of Milwaukee flew in over 4,000 police officers to support RNC security efforts. As a result of poor planning, lack of training, and community involvement, Columbus Ohio Police officers executed a well known houseless relative, Sam Sharpe.

We joined the Milwaukee Alliance, community organizers, and the Sharpe family in honoring Sam with a vigil, as well as spotlight the need for affordable housing and mental health services. #JusticeForSamSharpe
