Religious Education This Summer!
Our religious education programs tend to take a Summer break as the congregation comes and goes during the warm season. However, we’re going to have a few opportunities to engage our minds and our spirits this Summer! At the same time, please be in touch with me if you have other ideas for how to learn and explore this Summer!
High School and Middle School Events!
School is out, but there’s still plenty of time to have fun! After taking a poll of people’s schedules, we’ll be organizing some youth events this month and next for our High school and Middle school youth, as well as for those in late elementary.
The Junior High youth will be invited for a mini-golf outing and ice cream on July 28
th
in Chagrin Falls! Chaperones and drivers still needed, so parents and other volunteers can reach out to
[email protected]
if you are available and interested. Other parents, please RSVP as you are able!
Family Board Game Night!
July 19th
We have some serious and dedicated board game players in our midst at the UUCC, and we’re going to celebrate the fun of gathering over cardboard, cards, dice and plastic pieces with a family board game night on July 19th! We’ll have more than 25 games to choose from, and you are welcome to bring your own. You can also jump in and learn a new game!
This event will take place in the Fellowship Hall at the Shaker building from 4 - 7pm. Pizza and Popcorn will be provided, but everyone is invited to bring desserts, drinks and snacks.
Chalice Lighter’s And Friends Get Together!
July 21st
Are you in 4th -- 6th grade, have been a chalice lighter or might want to be one? We’re getting together on July 21st to hang out, eat some pizza, play some games and generally have a great time. Everyone in 4th -- 6th grade is welcome! Any questions, please ask Amy Glesius or email Allan Georgia. And please RSVP if you can with
[email protected]
if your child will be joining us!
A Chance to Chat while Beverage and Banter Is on Hiatus for July!
Rev. Joe and Allan will not be meeting in the community this month because of Rev. Joe’s WELL-DESERVED vacation.
But Allan finds it difficult to shut up, and certainly not for a whole month. So, he’s asked Mark Weber to meet with him on Sunday mornings to chat informally about important and/or big topics. As with beverage and banter, EVERYONE is welcome to sit and chat, joining that ongoing and never-really-ending conversation that occupies the curious. We’ll gather at 10AM around some tables in the fellowship hall. Feel free to bring coffee or tea and we’ll hope to have coffee available as well.

Tom Gibson’s Pollinator Pocket Gardens in the Nobel Neighborhood, Cleveland Heights
At the invitation of Renee Ruchotzke, UUCC’s friendly liaison to the broader UUA, I gave a presentation to Summer Institute earlier this month on our work in the Noble Neighborhood of Cleveland Heights. You may recall that we have created 11 36 sq. ft. Pollinator Pocket Gardens on Langton Road—with considerable financial support from UUCC.
As I was preparing PPT slides, I received—totally out of the blue—commentary from our chief neighborhood partner in the project, Madeleine Macklin. I was moved, bowled over—you name the superlative—by what she said.
Here are her observations:
▪ “Many of the people walking in the neighborhood often stop to chat about the [new] beauty of our street. Some just give ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs.’ But I am often told that their stress, depression, anxiety levels have gone down from walking, sharing, and experiencing the beautiful flowering plants on our street.”
▪ “One neighbor said the daily street walks have naturally improved her self-esteem and have motivated her to work in the yard and become closer to nature.”
▪ “Another woman stated, that she had never had her hands in dirt, but looking at the beautiful yards encouraged her to want get out work in her yard and walk more. It makes her feel safe in the neighborhood. She walks daily.”
▪ “Are our gardens a cure? Maybe yes, maybe no. But they are a beautiful sight to see!”
Here’s a picture of one of our new gardens—complete with butterfly!

It’s summer at UUCC and the Welcome Office needs you!
Everybody seems to like to take a little break in the summer - even our office volunteers! With that we need some substitutes in the Welcome Office. You can help out as little as a single 2-hour shift to as much as a day each week. The work is easy – mostly answering the phone, helping out visitors, and making the occasional copy. We have a handy reference guide so even if you feel like you don’t know everything you can still be useful. It’s easy work, but extremely valuable – callers really appreciate having a person answer their call!

SECOND TUESDAY BOOK CLUB
AUGUST 13, 2019
The Second Tuesday Book Club is skipping July and our next meeting is August 13. We will be reading
Factfulness by Hans Rosling
. It has ten reasons we are wrong about the world and why things are better than you think. It is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases. This is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world. We will be meeting in the Library at the Lancashire Building at 7:00 pm.
