“Why is it important for us to listen

to the music at home?”

Mom and Toddler Singing and Playing Instruments at Home

Repetition is a key way that young children learn new things and practice new skills---including music! That’s why it’s so important that your little ones have the chance to play with the songs you’re learning in your Music Together class at home as well as during class time. Exposure to the music only during your class doesn’t give your child enough repetition, or “practice time,” which they need for deep learning. When you play the songs outside of class, you’re giving your child valuable time to absorb, process, and play with the music. Then, each time your teacher leads you in drumming, dancing, or wiggling to the songs you already know, your child’s learning can be more relaxed, more playful, and more powerful.

P.S. Since you are your child’s favorite singer, when you know the songs better, you can sing them more easily and joyfully, which benefits you both!

Triangle Song Collection

Next semester, families in Music Together classes around the world will be singing and jamming along to Triangle. In addition to the brand new Cuban tune “Má Teodora”, the collection includes Music Together classics like “Nothin’ Blues” and “Hey, Ho, Nobody Home,” plus our take on traditional favorites, including the American play-party song, “Skip to My Lou.”

Song Story: Má Teodora

When we were on the hunt for a new song for the upcoming Music Together Triangle Song Collection, we knew we wanted a Spanish-language song. Our collections include Spanish material from a number of Spanish-speaking countries, but nothing from Cuba, so when we happened upon “Má Teodora,” we were excited at the possibilities it presented for our curriculum. My Toddler Won't

Let Me Sing!

We’ve heard this from lots of parents over the years: You’re singing along to your favorite song, when suddenly your toddler says, “Don’t sing, Mama!” or “Stop singing, Daddy!” This can be disconcerting! We want our children to speak their minds and express their desires, but . . . what do we do when their desires conflict with our desire to sing? You might wonder if your child no longer likes the sound of your singing voice and if you should stop singing with them. It helps to understand what’s at work in the emerging personhood of toddlers in order to decide what to do. (And it’s NOT about your singing!)
