Our Work in Action: Updates from the City Attorney’s Office

Adams Avenue Street Fair!

My team and I joined thousands of neighbors at the Adams Avenue Street Fair, one of San Diego’s favorite community traditions!

The fair featured live music, local vendors, circus performances, carnival rides, and of course, plenty of great food. At our booth, we shared resources and information about the important work my team does, and even added our own attraction: a spinning wheel where folks could win prizes!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello. It is always a joy to engage directly with our community, and events like this remind me why I love serving San Diego.

City Attorney's Office Scores Big in the Fight Against Fentanyl

Beyond the Arc: First Annual Fentanyl and Opioid Awareness Tournament

I was proud to join U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon and the MESA Foundation for the inaugural Beyond the Arc basketball tournament, raising awareness about the fentanyl and opioid epidemic. This event reflected the strong collaboration between my office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the MESA Foundation in addressing this crisis through prevention and community engagement.

SDSU fraternities faced off on the court, with members of the SDSU Men’s Basketball team stepping in as referees. More than just a game, this prevention-focused event highlighted community, teamwork, and the importance of building positive connections.

Building Connections, Sharing Impact

Lunch with "Mayor of the Day", Landry Gage

I had the joy of joining Mayor Todd Gloria and Landry Gage, an 8th grader from Pershing Elementary and this year’s “Mayor for a Day” winner, for lunch at City Hall.

We talked about leadership, her interest in the law, and my own experience as a lawyer in San Diego and now serving as City Attorney. Landry asked thoughtful questions and showed genuine curiosity, a wonderful reminder of how inspiring the next generation of leaders will be.

Beyond the Bar: Uplifting Black Entrepreneurs

I had the opportunity to attend Women of Color in Law’s Beyond the Bar: Uplifting Black Entrepreneurs event, co-presented by the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association. It was an inspiring evening that brought together incredible businesses, entrepreneurs, and community leaders!

Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night!

I had the honor of attending the 45th Annual Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night (P.A.E.S.A.N.) presented by the Pacific Beach Town Council!

It was an incredible evening celebrating our first responders — police, firefighters, park rangers, and lifeguards, who put their lives on the line to keep our city safe.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to join our community in saying thank you for their service, sacrifice, and dedication.

Constitution Day!

On September 17, we celebrated Constitution Day by reflecting on the document that has guided our nation for more than two centuries. It was written with the vision of justice, liberty, and equality — ideals that have required generations of struggle, sacrifice, and progress to bring closer to reality.

The Constitution is not self-executing. It relies on judges, lawyers, public servants, and community members to give it meaning every day. And it requires vigilance, because the values of fairness, democracy, and the rule of law are not guaranteed.

Inside the Presiding Courtroom, local constitutional experts reminded us that our work is not only about honoring the past but also about protecting the future. In this moment, when trust in our institutions is being tested, it is up to all of us to defend the principles that hold our democracy together.

National Lobster Day!

From fun facts to serious protections, lobsters remind us how important it is to care for our ocean neighbors. San Diego is fortunate to have California spiny lobsters right off our coast — and it’s up to all of us to help keep it that way.

The California spiny lobster sport season opened on September 26th and here are a few important reminders:

  • Legal size is 3¼ inches, measured in a straight line along the mid-line of the back from the rear edge of the eye socket to the rear edge of the body shell.
  • Always measure properly before keeping.
  • Return undersized lobsters immediately.
  • Follow all California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) regulations to protect our oceans.
  • Don’t forget to complete your lobster report card for each trip.

My office partners with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to enforce these laws, protect marine life, and ensure a sustainable future for our community.

Legal Actions

Taking Action to Protect Barrio Logan Families Against Health and Safety Threats

My office filed a civil enforcement action against SA Recycling and its executives for operating an illegal recycling business in Barrio Logan without the required permits. The lawsuit alleges violations of California’s Unfair Competition Law, the San Diego Municipal Code, and public nuisance laws.

The facility, located less than 150 feet from homes, has drawn repeated community complaints about noise, air pollution, and unsafe conditions. We are seeking civil penalties, injunctive relief, and an order to stop the unlawful operations to protect the health and safety of Barrio Logan residents.

We remain committed to holding businesses accountable when their unlawful practices threaten the health, safety, and quality of life of our communities.
