Apologies for my absence — I got trapped in The Tiki Room again (fool me thrice, shame on me.) After so much time imprisoned amongst the most garish and gaudy of my avian kin, I’m paying a visit to their polar opposite: the sophisticated and chic Bird Streets.
The Rubin House, designed in 1956 for a Hollywood couple by architect Richard Frazer, is Mid-century Modern at its best: clean, capacious, classy. Secluded by a protruding carport and tucked between two hills, the home radiates a sense of calm, in no small part due to its soaring floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors that flood with natural light, the tumbling native landscape, and a flamingo’s-eye-view of the Los Angeles cityscape.
As I stand next to the Rubin House’s hot tub that overlooks the sun setting on our beautiful town, something — perhaps the burbling jets or the neon sunset — brings to the mind The Tiki Room and dares to say: the fourth time will be different.
