Dear Friends,
At Generations Incorporated we believe that literacy is the key to lifelong success. We envision a day when all students, regardless of zip code, have the resources necessary to become literacy proficient, by the fourth grade.
We are excited to announce the launch of a multi-year strategic plan,
Read to Grow
.
Our goal with
Read to Grow
is to build on the successes and lessons learned from our last strategic plan, which honed our program model, allowed for expansion to new schools, and set the stage for participation in a third-party evaluation that will solidify the depth of our impact.
Despite our success, we know that there are still students who do not have the literacy skills they need by the fourth grade and through this new strategic plan,
we aim to expand our proven literacy model to reach even more students through four key objectives over the next three years:
- Innovate and standardize our literacy program model, particularly to facilitate expansion
- Increase our overall brand recognition as a first-in-class, literacy nonprofit
- Grow our literacy model to serve one new school district by Fall 2021
- Build a solid foundation of funding support to maintain organizational health and stability, while growing Generations Incorporated's programs to realize our mission and vision
We've already begun implementation of these objectives, and are excited to announce the
hiring of a new Deputy Director, Jen Bowen Flynn
, who will be overseeing our literacy program and volunteer recruitment. Jen brings a wealth of experience to this new role, and we are excited for her leadership and strategic vision as we continue to perfect and grow our program. You can learn more about Jen and her background below.
Our plan is ambitious, and we will need the ongoing commitment of supporters like you in order to be successful. We will continue to share more information about our plan and how you can get involved to support our future growth.
Thank you for staying with us in the movement to end the youth literacy crisis.Together, we are closing the literacy gap and ensuring more students have the skills necessary for lifelong success.
With Gratitude,

Generations Incorporated is pleased to announce the hiring of it's new Deputy Director, Jen Bowen Flynn.
As Deputy Director, Jen will play a key role in the execution of our new three-year strategic plan, Read to Grow, by focusing on program operation and growth.
Jen comes to Generations Incorporated with a wealth of experience and well-rounded background as a senior nonprofit and civic engagement leader. From high-level strategy development to hands-on volunteer recruitment and engagement, to program design and impact measurement, Jen's skillset are a perfect match for the new Deputy Director position.
With previous leadership roles at City Year and the Clinton Foundation, Jen most recently served as the Associate Director of Social Venture Partners (SVP) where she led program operations, managing all organizational grant making, member engagement, grantee and portfolio management, pro bono volunteering, communications, and events. She also consulted with Social Venture Partners International's senior leadership team on its strategic vision and its role within the venture philanthropy sector.
As a part of the senior management team at Generations Incorporated, Jen will help shape future organization-wide policies that will contribute to the organization's overall success. In addition to her responsibilities overseeing our programs and volunteer recruitment, Jen will act as a liaison to our key program and community partners relative to funding, contracts, and delivery of services.

A group
of Generations Incorporated staff and volunteers recently had the opportunity to meet with new
Boston Public Schools Superintendent, Brenda Cassellius. They discussed Dr. Cassellius' vision for the future of the district and our working together to address the youth literacy crisis. We look forward to our continued collaboration to support the districts youngest students.

This fall, Generations Incorporated said farewell to two long-standing staff members, Katie Klister Brown and Kendra Mrozek. Their contributions to the organization have shaped it to be a treasured resource in the communities we serve.
Katie and Kendra joined Generations Incorporated as AmeriCorps members in 2004 and 2007, respectively. They both joined the staff after their Americorps service and grew with the organization to most recently serve in leadership positions overseeing our Literacy Program and Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement.
Over the past 15 years Katie and Kendra have worked with thousands of community older adults across Boston and Revere in order to shape our results-driven intergenerational literacy program and change the academic trajectory of thousands of youth in Greater Boston.
We are grateful for all that Katie and Kendra have done to further our mission, and we look forward to their remaining a part of the Generations Incorporated family.

This fall, Generations Incorporated joined forces with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for their annual corporate volunteer week. They donated books and literacy resources to help support many of our teachers and students in Boston and Revere. We are grateful for their support and ongoing partnership!

We are so proud to see our alumna Smiler Haynes featured as one of the faces of the City of Boston's Age Strong Commission public awareness campaign. We are proud to partner with the Age Strong commission and answer the challenge of #HowDoYouAgeStrong by offering opportunities for the Age Strong community to give back by building the literacy skills of Greater Boston's youth.

Generations Incorporated was joined by the team at Santander to help with setting up and organizing our recruitment and training materials for our new volunteer training workshops. Thank you for your time and support!
