letter from the President

learning and growing

No matter how much time has passed, saying goodbye to summer always reminds me of sending my daughter, Olivia, back to school. There were tears and the usual nerves that come with a new routine, but once she settled in, I was amazed by the excitement in her voice as she shared everything she’d learned on the car ride home.

That memory reminds me that change can be a little unsettling — but it also brings opportunities to learn and grow.

I thought of that lesson recently when I nearly became a victim of fraud. One afternoon, I received a call from someone claiming to represent a non-profit supporting families of injured police officers. As the spouse of an officer, I was ready to help. But when they asked for my credit card information, I hesitated. I asked for their request in writing — and later learned it was a scam.

how protecting yourself helps your credit union protect you

Fraud is everywhere these days — from phishing emails to unexpected credit card charges — and it can feel overwhelming to keep up. At Canopy Credit Union, our top priority is keeping your money safe. The great news is that your funds are federally insured for up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Association (NCUA). That means if you’re a victim of fraud, your money is protected. But here’s the truth: protecting your accounts is a team effort. If sensitive information — like your credit card number, PIN, or wire instructions — is shared willingly, those funds are no longer insured. Once that information is disclosed, your credit union’s ability to safeguard your money becomes very limited.

That’s why taking steps to safeguard your personal information is vital. By being skeptical and protective of your information, your credit union can do more to keep your funds secure — and respond quickly when fraudsters attack.

Jan

member highlight:

you belong here

If there’s one face everyone recognizes at Canopy Credit Union, it’s Jan. A Spokane local and member since 1975, Jan has witnessed Canopy’s growth over the decades. But what keeps him coming back isn’t just our services or products; it’s the personal connections he has with our team.

Every week, Jan stops by our Mallon branch for his deposits and a cup of coffee, greeting staff by name and sharing a smile. He even says hello to Charlotte Nemec, our CEO/President, and brings flowers to staff on their birthdays. “Canopy never lost its personal touch,” he says, and his loyalty proves it.

Members like Jan aren’t just numbers, they’re part of our community. It’s that sense of belonging that keeps him managing his cleaning business and home loan with us. For nearly 50 years, the relationships he values have kept him coming back — and they will for many more.
