The old days of getting a permit “at the counter” and writing a check are long gone. Aside from the shocking costs is the large variation in amounts. Despite one state-wide building code, fee determination, a local responsibility, is not an exact science and in constant flux. We are regularly asked about the best and worst jurisdictions on fees so we put together a 10-City comparative of regulatory fees for 3 types of projects: Free-standing new warehouse; new multi-family project; tenant improvement project.

Our first comparative is based on a Free-standing new warehouse. Fees range from $542k to $3.8m on the same design parameters – 100,000sf, one story, Type III construction, $15m value. Fees are estimates based on recent research. Fees do not include utility companies’ fees, community benefits and other fees that could come out of the entitlement process.
