Distributing Supplemental Food For Adults, Children, & Especially Seniors, Who Lack An Adequate Supply

Feed More's Food Lion Feed's Demonstration Kitchen

Clarksville Food Pantry President Jessie Ruff attended recent open house!

The Feed More South Hill Branch serves as a distribution center supporting agencies and programs in our southern region, including the counties of Brunswick, Charlotte, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and the city of Emporia. At over 12,000 square feet, the South Hill facility stores perishable and non-perishable items to meet the needs of the South Central region of the state, and is the proud home of Feed More's Food Lion Feed's Demonstration Kitchen. Now available as a meeting space for food demonstrations and nutrition education events, Jessie had the pleasure of touring the facility and brainstorming with others potential opportunities for our community.

Volunteer Highlight

Clarksville Presbyterian Church

A dedication to alleviating hunger and eliminating its underlying causes is embedded deeply in the congregation of Clarksville Presbyterian Church. Within the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination, the church has been recognized as a “Hunger Action Congregation” and most recently as a “Matthew 25 Church”. Church members serve in leadership roles in the Food Pantry, Backpack Buddies, and church mission projects.

The congregation is quick to step forward when the church is scheduled to distribute food or to help with jobs such as loading tons of incoming deliveries, stocking food on the shelves, or entering computer data. When asked why they do it, most will say that serving others is what Christ commanded us to do, but they will also affirm that developing relationships with the clients and other volunteers is a wonderful benefit, and working at the Pantry is fun! As the church embarks on a new initiative for “Eradicating Systemic Poverty”, the community can watch for more good things to come!

Volunteers, please stop by the pantry during open hours and ask the volunteer group that is working for tests. This will help us limit the number of people inside the pantry and efficiently meet the needs of our guests in line.

The Dating Dilemma

MILK DOES A BODY GOOD

And We've Got Milk!

While Supplies Last

Thank you to Dollar General, our community partner for the donation of 1/2 gallon and gallon jugs of whole milk dated May 5th!

How long can you keep dairy products like yogurt, milk,

and cheese in the refrigerator?

If unopened, whole milk lasts 5-7 days, reduced-fat and skim milk last 7 days and non-fat and lactose-free milk last 7-10 days past its printed date, if refrigerated. Milk can be refrigerated seven days; buttermilk, about two weeks. Milk or buttermilk may be frozen for about three months.

Yogurt can be stored in the refrigerator (40 ºF) one to two weeks or frozen (0 ºF) for one to two months. Soft cheeses such as cottage cheese, ricotta or Brie can be refrigerated one week but they don't freeze well. Hard cheeses such as cheddar, Swiss and Parmesan can be stored in the refrigerator six months before opening the package and three to four weeks after opening. It can also be frozen six months.

Processed cheese slices don't freeze well but can be kept in the refrigerator one to two months. Sour cream is safe in the refrigerator about one to three weeks but doesn't freeze well.

FDA supports efforts by the food industry to make “Best if Used By” the standard phrase to indicate the date when a product will be at its best flavor and quality. Consumers should examine foods for signs of spoilage that are past their “Best if used by” date. If the products have changed noticeably in color, consistency or texture, consumers may want to avoid eating them.

For more information, you may call the FDA toll-free at 888-723-3366 or go to FDA's website.

Look for the Feed More Perishable Distribution Guidelines posted on the refrigerated display case and on the produce refrigerator at the pantry to assist you when distributing perishable items.
