Break Through Tech is busier than ever!

In 2024 we doubled down on our commitment to help industry partners build robust, tech talent pipelines that fuel innovation. Over 250 organizations worked with our student fellows to gain access to fresh perspectives on their business challenges. At the same time, our programs provided opportunities for partner employees to grow as mentors and leaders, developing skills that enhance their careers, job satisfaction and team performance.

We are also celebrating major milestones, including hosting the largest AI program of its kind in the U.S., with nearly 1,000 fellows from 200 universities nationwide. These students are trained in AI/ML technologies and bring unique approaches and insights to real-world challenges posed by our industry partners.

As highlighted in The New York Times our novel approach works! We are thrilled to share that 80% of our participants are hired in tech positions—transforming industries along the way.

Tackling Bias in Crime Prediction Models with Abt Global

As part of the Break Through Tech AI program, fellows get a unique opportunity to work with industry partners to tackle a Challenge Project that can be solved using AI and machine learning tools. 

Working alongside Abt Global, a leading communications and social impact firm, our fellows worked with company mentors to tackle bias in crime prediction models. By analyzing FBI crime data, identifying biases, and applying fairness-aware algorithms, they jointly aim to create ethical, transparent AI tools that promote equity in public safety. 

This project highlights how we work with industry partners to solve real-world challenges big and small. Our fellows develop solutions that can be applied immediately and hiring teams benefit from the opportunity to work alongside potential new tech talent.

In this example, Abt Global’s dedication to social impact complements Break Through Tech's mission to prepare female and gender non-conforming technologists, demonstrating how industry collaborations and experiential learning can drive meaningful results.

On October 24th, Break Through Tech Fellows from across the tri-state area gathered at Accenture’s New York office for the inaugural Break Through Tech Connect event—a milestone program honoring our top-tier partners who stand with us year after year to increase the number of women and gender non-conforming individuals in tech.
