News from the Franciscan Central Archive:
The Franciscan Central Archive has decided on our future home! We have been invited to purchase land in Frankfort, Illinois, from the Franciscan Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
We recognize this decision is just the beginning and there is much work ahead. While we move forward with planning our archival facility and capital campaign, we remain committed to assisting Franciscan entities and our partners.
The FCA currently has 10 partners whose archival collections will be held within the facility:
Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity
Holy Name Province, Stella Niagara, NY
Sacred Heart Province, Denver, CO
St. Francis Province, Redwood City, CA
Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY
Sisters of St. Francis of Rochester, NY
Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Francis, WI
Wheaton Franciscan Sisters, Wheaton, IL
Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, Joliet, IL
Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, La Crosse, WI
Franciscan Sisters of Chicago, Lemont, IL
In a spirit of advocacy, we are also in conversation with a couple of Franciscan universities as to how we may be of service.
“This decision is an exciting milestone for the Franciscan Central Archive Project and the preservation of Franciscan history in the United States. As congregations diminish, it is more important than ever to protect their rich history,” said FSA Archivist Ellen Winger. “This year alone, the Congregational Archives in Allegany has facilitated academic research for three different projects. The sisters’ history has so much to teach us. The successful establishment of the Franciscan Central Archive will ensure that their charism and legacy will be accessible for years to come.
“Now the real work begins to make the vision of the Franciscan Central Archive a reality. The FCA is looking to connect with experts in the areas of finance, fundraising, and project management to serve as advisors or board members. If you have expertise in any of these fields, value the preservation of the Franciscan charism, and are interested in partnering with the Franciscan Central Archive, please reach out to the FCA at fcarchive@franciscanway.org.”
