Why I Walk – Jack Moon, Co-Founder
Registration is now open for the 2021 Bladder Cancer Canada Awareness Walk. Like last year, our walk is virtual. Presented by Ferring Canada, Canada Walks for Bladder Cancer will take place during the weekend of September 25-26, 2021.

Here’s co-founder Jack Moon’s reason for walking:

“I’m Jack Moon, a survivor of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and co-founder of Bladder Cancer Canada. Years ago, there was very little support for patients diagnosed with bladder cancer across Canada. David Guttman and I worked together to change that and eventually, we started the very first annual awareness walk.”

“Many years later, I’m still walking for Bladder Cancer Canada. I walk because I believe that patient support is critical in the road to recovery. Through our peer support network and online programs like our discussion forum, support groups, and webinars, we’re able to support bladder cancer patients during a difficult time in their lives. And because we raise money with our awareness walk, these programs are FREE to anyone that needs them.”

Thanks to Jack and David’s efforts, bladder cancer patients are able to receive support during every stage of their bladder cancer diagnosis – from early detection of the disease to patient support (during and after diagnosis) and help for their caregivers.

With your support of this year’s walk, these programs and services will remain FREE to the 80,000 Canadians currently living with a bladder cancer diagnosis and the 12,000 individuals that will be diagnosed this year.

Need to talk about your diagnosis?
Our One2One Peer Support Program has been around for many years and in 2020, we partnered with Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation to expand our services. This successful collaboration allows us to extensively train our volunteers and quickly support and address the concerns of the number of Canadians being diagnosed with bladder cancer each year. This program is just one of the many services offered free to patients at any stage and with any type of bladder cancer.

Peer support for caregivers and family members is also available!
By connecting with a peer support volunteer, you will receive personalized support to help you overcome the emotional, physical, functional, and practical challenges that patients and their family members face in their bladder cancer journey. Our volunteers are compassionate and extremely supportive, having experienced bladder cancer themselves. Visit our website here to learn about this program and others. For direct peer support, please call 1-866-674-8889 or send us an email at info@bladdercancercanada.org
Patient Webinar: Demystifying Bladder Cancer Surgeries and Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy for Management of Outcomes
Join Christina Dzieduszycki, Registered Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist (Hons Kin) in this presentation on "Demystifying Bladder Cancer Surgeries and Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy for Management of Outcomes”. Recorded at our April Hamilton Support Group and facilitated by BCC volunteer Alex Huang, this presentation gives special consideration to the male experience but much of the learnings can be applied to women living with a bladder cancer diagnosis and/or the removal of their bladder.
In addition to this presentation, we are happy to make available a recording of a virtual workshop held for both bladder cancer prostate cancer Patients in May 2021. The workshop was also run by Christina. This hands-on workshop provided a plan to exercise the core group of muscles to help with incontinence, bowel movement, flatulating and managing scar tissue remodeling - an often overlooked bi-product of surgery to remove the bladder and prostate. To access this recording, please send an email to info@bladdercancercanada.org

A Support Group for Francophones Starting this September!
Over the years, our support groups have been created in different cities across Canada. However, none of these groups are located in a francophone area. Starting in September 2021, francophones will be able to access a brand new support group set up specifically for them thanks to the initiative of Marc-A. Besner and Alain Bergeron, two volunteers from Bladder Cancer Canada. Marc-A. lives in Montreal and has experience working in the field of care and support and is currently studying social work. Alain, for his part, has several years of experience in the field of research on urological cancers. He has also been the coordinator of the Quebec City's bladder cancer awareness Walk since 2018.
This new support group will not be associated with a particular city because it will be virtual. Meetings will take place on ZOOM every first Saturday of the month at 9:00 am ET. The first meeting will take place on Saturday, September 4th, 2021.

To register and receive instructions on how to log in, please send an email to info@cancerdelavessiecanada.org or call 1-866-674-8889 to leave a message. Welcome to all francophones!
Help improve bladder cancer treatments for others
Have you been diagnosed with bladder cancer and are you aged 18 years or older? If so, you may be eligible to participate in an online survey.

Global Perspectives, a market research company specializing in the healthcare sector is working with Evidera, a scientific research company, to learn about patient’s preferences for treatments of bladder cancer. They are looking for people living with bladder cancer that may be eligible to take part.

The study aims to understand patients’ preferences for various aspects of treatments. The study is being conducted on behalf of a pharmaceutical company to ensure that new treatments best reflect patients’ needs. Participants would be asked to complete a one-time online survey, at home in their own time. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and includes questions about patients’ preferences for different aspects of treatment for bladder cancer. The study does not involve any treatments; they are only interested in opinions.

Eligible participants who fully participate in the study will receive $125 CAD for taking part. Note: eligible patients will need to provide proof of their diagnosis through a range of methods e.g. a letter from their physician, proof of medication or other medical documentation.

Participation is entirely voluntarily, and your personal information will be kept as confidential as possible. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with bladder cancer and are interested in participating or would like more information about the study, please contact Joanna Rodrigues at Global Patients at joanna@global-patients.com.
