October 2024

Dear friends,

We've hit the ground running in terms of the fall semester. Evidence of our behind-the-scenes work is showing up in our numbers:

  • New student enrollment grew by 30% over our fall 2023, which is an unprecedented milestone in a challenging market for students.
  • Our FY24 Fast Facts have been updated and we’ve officially exceeded 1,000 learners!
  • Construction is on pace on our purpose-built campus in Roxbury’s Nubian Square. Our topping off ceremony will take place in December 2024.
  • Throughout the year, students in our construction and trade programs have been making site visits to the new campus in ways that are integrated into classroom learning.
  • Our Future Forward campaign is still going strong as we continue to raise funds for academic programs, scholarships, wrap around services for students, and our campus in Nubian Square. To date, $55M has been committed toward our $60M goal. I am deeply grateful for the generous support of our partners and donors for their enthusiastic investment in our mission.
  • Employers who participated in our inaugural Co-op program this summer cheered our students’ motivation and commitment to on-the-job learning. Co-op student Hadgerson Marcellus (Automotive Technology '25) even earned the September “Golden Brook” award (the equivalent of Employee of the Month) from his company, Boston Duck Tours. We've announced that our co-op program will expand this year to include students in all our automotive, construction management, and engineering technology programs.

As you’ll read below, much strategic improvement and adaptation is afoot. We aren’t resting on our laurels at Franklin Cummings Tech. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Opticianry Department Pilots Telehealth Eye Exam Technology

The Opticianry Department at Franklin Cummings Tech installed an optician-assisted Telehealth Eye Exam Lab, becoming the first Opticianry school in the US to incorporate this state-of-the art technology into the curriculum. The lab, which provides students with an identical learning experience as they would be exposed to in real eye healthcare settings, will be piloted over the next semester before being rolled out to real-world patients. The lab was made possible by an equipment grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ STEM Tech Career Academy program and a generous donation of trainer time and connectivity equipment by Digital Optometrics.

Building Tomorrow's Cleantech Workforce

We held our 2nd Community Conversation in Nubian Square on October 8 – Building Tomorrow’s Cleantech Workforce Today. Moderator Jimmy Hills guided the discussion of increasing opportunities in the cleantech ecosystem. The conversation highlighted our future forward perspectives, collaborations, and initiatives, along with our partners in this work. Thank you to panelists Gustavo Quiroga (LISC), Rev. Willie Bodrick (TACC) and Dr. Basma Mewafy (Franklin Cummings Tech) for a great discussion!

Discovery Days Are Back

The Admissions Department is gearing up for its highly popular Discovery Day series. Last year, over 800 students took part in this series of free, 3-hour events to help young people think in new ways about college and careers. Each event includes hands-on activities, conversations with industry professionals, campus tours, lunch, and prizes.

This year’s events are:

  • Biotech and Opticianry Day – 11/6/2024 *
  • Engineering Day – 11/20/2024
  • Cyber Day – 12/3/2024
  • Auto Day – 3/4/2025
  • Construction Management and the Trades Day – 3/19/2025
  • Clean Energy Tech Day – 4/3/2025

*The college is especially grateful to Vertex for their generous support of Biotech and Opticianry Day. To learn more about how your organization can sponsor Discovery Day programs, please visit the Sponsorship Form.

Alumni Success Story: Domenic Glennon

Opticianry Grad Domenic Glennon

Dominic Glennon, Opticianry Class of 2021, was the first person in his family to graduate from college. Today, he is working as a licensed optician and assistant store manager and earning enough money to afford his own apartment and car. Glennon encouraged his nephew to enroll in our Opticianry associate degree program last year, part of his ongoing effort to inspire more family members to attend college and build a “family tree of opticians.”
