February 2018
Lent begins on February 14

"The 40 days of Lent that lead to Easter are the most sacred and spiritually powerful in the Christian calendar. From the Ash Wednesday reminder to 'remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,' to the dramatic liturgy on Good Friday, leading to the joyful Easter 'Exultet' and the hymn 'Jesus Christ Is Risen Today' - Lent is a time when we Christians are invited to examine our faith, and deepen the commitment to livthe Christian life."

ONE Conference 2018
Mercy and Beyond: Sharing our Joy

The annual ONE Conference brings 1,000 parish and ministry leaders from across Catholic Vancouver together to connect, learn and inspire each other. Speakers who have inspired thousands of people to receive God's mercy and share His joy with others include: Fr James Mallon author of "Divine Renovation"; Dr Josephine Lombardi; Abbot John Braganza OSB; and Archbishop J Michael Miller, CSB.

"How do we give people the tools to be evangelizers? Part of doing that, we feel, is helping them be better Catholics themselves, more firm in their faith, and more able to share their faith. That's done in so many ways", says planning committee chair Michele Smillie. Find out how.

Words to Inspire

"Faith is like a bright ray of sun light. It enables us to see God in all things as well as all things in God."

"Have patience with all things, But, first of all with yourself."

St Francis de Sales
(1567-1622)
Patron saint of writers & journalists

This Month's Featured Ministry
Altar Servers

Altar serving gives young people (boys & girls who have received their first confession & communion) the opportunity to participate actively in the mass. Serving during mass gives support to the priest and allows young people to familiarise themselves with the rituals of our faith. Servers have several supporting duties to carry out: carrying the processional cross and candles, carrying the incense and thurible, holding the missal for the celebrant when he is not at the altar, assisting the priest when he receives the gifts from the people, washing the hands of the priest before the prayer over the gifts, and removing items from the altar after communion.

"What hope you give to your parishes and to the whole Church! Your joy and enthusiasm for life, your sincerity and openness, your obvious love of Jesus, tell us of the older generations something very important.
( Archbishop J Michael Miller to altar servers in September 2017)

Our Contemplative Supporters

"In a little place set high on a hill, surrounded by the mountains and overlooking the Fraser River, the incense of prayer rises twenty-four hours a day, shedding light on the world below. The prayer rises from the open hearts and the empty hands of the Poor Sisters of Saint Clare as they live in the simple joy of their beloved Lord." Thus reads the website introduction to our Poor Clares in Mission.

"The Church needs you", said Pope Francis to a gathering of contemplative sisters in Lima, Peru, recently. He continued: " Strive to grow in the fraternal life, so that every monastery can be a beacon of light in the midst of disunity and division."

Faith Formation on your iphone?

"The modern Catholic family is driving down the highway of life, running across traffic and distractions along the way" ... Who's going " to offer friendly and accessible on-ramps to faith and spirituality"? That question and that faith formation metaphor are addressed by veteran religious educator and author
John Roberto in this article from a recent National Catholic Reporter post.

If this sounds like your family and you'd like some ideas on how to deal with the issue of "too much to do, too little time", follow the link below.
Wise Words

"Dear friends, Lent is the favourable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbour. The Lord, who overcame the deceptions of the Tempter during the forty days in the desert, shows us the path we must take. May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the gift of God's word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need. ... Let us pray for one another so that, by sharing in the victory of Christ, we may open our doors to the weak and poor. Then we will be able to experience and share to the full the joy of Easter."

Our Stewardship Prayer

Generous God

I give thanks to you for the gifts
you have given me:
my life, my family, my friends,
my time, my talents,
& my material possessions.
All that I have comes from you.
Help me to remember this
and rejoice in your goodness.

I give glory to you, my God, as I make stewardship a way of life.

Amen
