letter from the President

it's never too late to keep moving forward

I recently spoke with an employee who shared frustrations about the current season of her life. She felt caught between her dreams and reality, viewing that gap as a personal failure, especially when comparing herself to peers on social media. I empathized. The tension she described between achievement and self-comparison is completely understandable, especially now.

Cost of living is high, and milestones many once considered rites of passage—living debt-free, buying a home, retiring by 65—feel increasingly out of reach for many. Optimism about the future can feel at odds with the financial realities of today.

So I asked her a few questions:

Are you living your day-to-day life in a way that supports your goals five or ten years from now? Do you have a plan that allows you to take small, manageable steps toward something bigger?

circumstances didn't define her

Nazeerah never imagined she’d become a business owner—let alone one whose work feeds people, creates jobs, and gives back to the community. For years, survival took precedence over long-term planning. Money was a day-to-day concern, not a tool she could use to build her future.

In November 2022, everything changed. Nazzy was at risk of losing her car. She struggled to make payments and feared repossession. She knew she needed help but didn’t know where to turn. While searching for answers, she came across a Canopy Credit Union social media post about refinancing. She made an appointment at the Mallon branch—unsure, but hopeful.

That meeting was the first time Nazzy truly learned what refinancing meant. The team walked her through her credit, reviewed her pay stubs, and—most importantly—took the time to understand her situation. Instead of rushing her into a product, Canopy’s team met her where she was. When she asked how much ongoing financial coaching would cost, she was surprised to learn it was free.

She became a member that day.

refresh your money mindset

If there’s one thing we know you’re looking forward to this Spring, it’s cleaning.

Okay, you got us! We’ll always choose blue skies, fresh flowers, and a boost of vitamin D over the chores we’ve been putting off all winter. We also know “about half of Americans…worry daily about their finances,” according to RamseySolutions, which is why one of the best ways to have a stress-free spring is by cleaning up your money mindset.

What is a Money Mindset?

A Money Mindset is how we define our relationship with money. If you’ve ever thought of yourself as “good” or “bad” with money, that’s an example of your Money Mindset. Your unique Money Mindset can influence your spending choices and feelings around money.

How do we form Money Mindsets?

how to buy a home in 2026

With home prices climbing for the last several years, becoming a homeowner feels like an unattainable goal for many. Balancing a down payment, emergency fund, and additional costs like taxes and insurance adds stress to what felt like a standard rite of passage for Americans. But just because becoming a homeowner may be more challenging doesn’t mean it’s impossible—especially in 2026.

In fact, buying a home may be more feasible now than it has been in years. According to CNBC, mortgage rates have “dropped below 6%, matching their lowest levels since 2022.” In Spokane, home prices have dropped 1% compared to last year. The gradual shift to a buyer’s market means those who were previously priced out of their dream to become homeowners may have an opportunity to achieve a lifelong goal.

If your goal is to buy a home in 2026, these tips will help you on your journey!
