A few years ago, just as I was transitioning into the CEO role at Canopy, I took on the challenge of training for and participating in competitions known as Spartan Races. The events involve running long distances over challenging terrain and completing a series of obstacles at various stages along the course. One of the most daunting for me was an obstacle that required runners to navigate across a series of hand holds, sort of like extreme monkey bars, only each of the hand holds would rotate as you tried to grab onto it. Needless to say, it was a difficult and frustrating challenge – especially when your hands are wet and covered in mud.
The one thing that helped me get through those races, though, was the constant encouragement and support of my training partner, friend and coworker Shelly. When I would want to give up, Shelly would be there to remind me that I could overcome whatever was in front of me. We supported each other and that made overcoming the obstacles feel like something we could succeed at together.
