As we each think about year-end charitable donations, we at Global Sojourns Giving Circle are grateful to all who have supported us steadfastly or sporadically. You are our lifeblood.
And, as our fiscal year concludes, we note that today’s issues seem more urgent and numerous than ever — pandemic relief, human rights and food insecurity, to name a few.
Where some concerns converge is Global Sojourns Giving Circle. Giving to GSGC covers so much, supporting the confluence of several widespread but long-term efforts: educating girls, gender equality and protecting the environment. All will lead to a better world.

Traveler and storyteller Madie Eidam has known our work in Southern Africa since she was a young teen. Struck by the confluence of our efforts and the global issues and social movements grabbing headlines, Madie, now 24, shares her observations, experience and research with us. Meeting the Challenges, and Thriving |
|
The pandemic hit particularly hard in communities where GSGC works. The local economies are tourism-based, and tourist dollars have disappeared. GSGC-supported Mentors have pivoted and improvised as each challenge has arisen, and we, as Board members, continue to have the utmost faith in them.
Mentors are overseeing gardens to feed the hungry, keeping girls and boys focused on school lessons, tutoring them in preparation for exams and devising their own academic exercises. They are making home visits, monitoring food supplies and watching for signs of domestic violence or abuse. They check in regularly by phone. And they are buoying one another as the pandemic drags on.
Because of your generosity, we ignited two new clubs in Dete, Zimbabwe, and your year-end gift this month will ensure our outreach next year to our current clubs and even more new ones. Interest in our model is booming, and your gift will offer hope and opportunity to more young people. Thank you.

Educate a Girl, Save the Planet |
|
Educating girls is paramount to their well-being — and the planet’s.
In 2017, a broad coalition called Project Drawdown ranked educating girls sixth among 80 immediate measures to reverse climate change. Educating girls means later marriages, fewer children, greater economic prosperity, a smaller carbon footprint, better energy, environmental and wildlife conservation, and greater life and problem-solving skills.
People and organizations ranging from natural historian David Attenborough to the United Nations support this conclusion. For us, it is central. Educating girls prepares them for a life of greater opportunity. That’s what Global Sojourns Giving Circle is all about.

More Oregon residents are learning about GSGC thanks to supporters who are selling “I hear you. I see you. I believe in you.” T-shirts to help meet our year-end fundraising goal.
Most customers hadn’t heard of GSGC before venturing into The Difference Clothing Boutique just south of Portland, but their feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and T-shirts are flying out the door, said Daron Deonier-Clemons, the store’s buyer.
The soft shirts are emblazoned with our signature statement on the front and website graphic and information on the back. They were designed by the boutique’s employees and printed a few miles north, in Founder Priscilla Plummer’s hometown of Vancouver, Wash.

In Southern Africa, and around the world, a dance challenge has taken hold and is spreading joy and creating community. The #JerusalemaChallenge was even encouraged by South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, during a national coronavirus briefing.
