Sternberg Lecture Series: Nobody's Decision

Artificial intelligence did not appear out of nowhere. In this lecture sponsored by the Ogden Honors College, Associate Professor Roy Heidelberg situates AI within a much longer story about writing, bureaucracy, and the drive to organize thought itself. Rather than treating AI as a sudden rupture or technological marvel, he explores it as the latest extension of systems we have been building for centuries, systems designed to make thinking permanent, structured, and administrable.

Drawing on ancient philosophy and modern debates about large language models, with examples from education and public life, he considers what changes and what does not when decision-making becomes increasingly automated. The question is not whether machines can think like us, but what happens when our institutions are built to think like machines.

Control in Crisis: What the Border Reveals About the Limits of Administrative Governance

Presented by María Verónica Elías, Associate Professor, University of Texas San Antonio College for Health, Community, and Public Policy

Why has US border control remained in crisis despite decades of reform efforts? This talk argues that the US–Mexico border reveals a deeper failure of administrative governance rather than a problem of policy design or managerial effectiveness. Drawing on public administration theory and empirical evidence from border enforcement and asylum adjudication, it shows how results-driven management logics have displaced legal judgment, due process, and public values. The border emerges as a critical site where administrative practices actively produce—or undermine—state legitimacy and democratic authority.

Tiger Trade Pop-Up Store

The LSU Graduate Student Association is hosting Tiger Trade, a thrift-pop up store giving new lives to gently used items. Start your spring cleaning early and contribute to the store, or browse it yourself to find something you need.

Watch this reel for drop-off locations leading up to the store opening. Items accepted include clothes, accessories, household items, school supplies, books, and non-perishable foods. Donations accepted until March 2.
