Ourso Experience chart your career

Preparing for a Second Interview

  1. Research the company thoroughly. Be ready to answer questions like “Why do you want to work for XYZ Corp?” or “What do you know about XYZ Corp?” Make sure to highlight not only what you hope to gain from them but also what you can contribute. You don’t need to know everything about the company, but be familiar enough to speak confidently about what they do.
  2. Take a deep dive into the job description. Make sure you fully understand what is expected of this role and how your background aligns with those expectations.
  3. Expect more specific questions. Second-round interviews often focus on the details of the job, your understanding of the company, and how you would support its goals.
  4. Prepare for behavioral questions. These are designed to assess how you’ve handled situations in the past and how that might predict your future performance. They usually start with “tell me about a time when…” or “give me an example of…”
  5. Review your résumé carefully. Be ready to discuss your most relevant experiences in more depth—what you learned, the skills you developed, and how they connect to this role and company.
  6. Prepare descriptive examples. Think of a few strong stories or examples that illustrate your strengths, accomplishments, and problem-solving skills. Specifically, prepare examples/stories that fall within these categories: teamwork, leadership, conflict resolution, time management, taking initiative, failure, adversity, and ethical dilemmas.

When it comes to questions to ask them, use the Student Career Guide (page 65, linked here) for inspiration. Focus on asking questions you can’t easily find online or in the job description- things that will help you feel confident deciding if this is the right fit for you.

For questions they might ask you, refer to the questions in this resource or consider using an AI tool to generate potential questions based on the job description.

Celebrate a Teacher: Nominations Now Open

Help celebrate the LSU faculty who are doing an exceptional job communicating and connecting with you this semester. Through CxC's annual Celebrate a Teacher campaign, you can anonymously recognize a professor who's making a difference in your learning. Your professor will be personally recognized for their efforts, so please take 2 minutes to share their name!

About Celebrate a Teacher:

Every Fall since 2020, CxC has solicited undergraduate student feedback about professors they want to celebrate for doing a great job communicating and connecting in the classroom (and oftentimes beyond). The submission form is anonymous and has an optional field for comments. We consistently receive notes about teachers going above and beyond to ensure their students learn material, are seen in their class, and are supported. We compile the responses before the Thanksgiving break and send a note to the professors who received a submission, including any optional comments we receive. We also share those results with deans and department chairs so they can celebrate their faculty as well.
