Dear St. Junipero Serra Parents and Staff,

As you are aware, the California Department of Public Health is again discouraging “out of state travel” for the upcoming holiday season and suggesting a 14-day quarantine if you choose to do so (see the travel advisory). The Diocese of Orange has asked all of its schools to follow the protocol below should a student travel out of state during the upcoming holiday period:

Directive from the Diocese of Orange
Students and families who travel out of state can transition to distance learning for 14 days upon their return or are requested to provide a negative COVID-19 test result for re-entry to campus.

While this directive does apply to the Holidays, St. Serra is committed to remaining open for in-person instruction. Therefore, we will continue to follow this directive for all out of state travel from now through the end of the 2020-2021 school year. The health and safety of our students and staff are our top priority, and keeping the school open requires all of us to be healthy to continue in-person learning here at St. Serra.

If you do go out of state, please follow the Travel Advisory and Diocesan directive. If your child gets a COVID-19 test, give the test results to Mary Hogan, Health Room Coordinator, at, before your child returns to campus. If your child needs to quarantine, please notify Mary Hogan then your child’s principal to set up live streaming (Carol Reiss at or Julie Radzai at

We understand the difficult sacrifices students, teachers, staff, and families are making during the pandemic to ensure the health and safety of our school community. Our ability to keep our schools open for in-person instruction is dependent on our collective commitment to adhere to proven safety practices, both inside and outside of school. We appreciate our partnership with you.

Please see recommendations and tips for the Holidays provided by the Diocese of Orange and CDC below.

In other news, next week, December 14 through 17, St. Serra Catholic School will be holding an emergency safety drill on our campus. This scheduled drill will be either a Lockdown or a Shelter-in-Place drill. In addition, we will be evacuating to the field during this drill. Please take the opportunity to discuss with your child(ren) why St. Serra holds these regular drills. Our objective is to continue to ensure the safety and wellbeing of every individual at our school.

Thank you!
