Let's Talk Outdoor Gear!

Hello New Families,

As you know, our students go outside multiple times, every day, in all weather. Back to school supply lists are coming in a July Tuesday Note. You will see a lot of outdoor gear like rain and snow pants, coats, boots, hats, gloves, etc.

So, where do you buy all this gear?

A lot of families have great luck with Goodwill, Salvation Army and other thrift stores. We also recommend asking if anyone has your size (especially boots) on our SGWS Family Facebook Group because kids love to outgrow things over the summer!

We also host a Gear Swap at our Welcome Back Dinner after New Family Orientation on August 25th and we encourage new families to take whatever they need – no “swapping” required!

If you prefer new, big box stores (DICK's Sporting Goods, WalMart, Target, Kohls) have some items, although they tend to run out quickly this time of year. If you like to shop online, these stores are popular.

What’s the protocol for outdoor gear?

Children should always arrive at school wearing their outdoor gear. Backpacks, lunches, water bottles, extra clothes, etc. can be placed on the child’s hallway hook (or outside hook for PreK and K) before the student heads outside or to the Meadow.

Although it may seem counterintuitive, children need to wear their rain paints and coats and boots to school in the morning even when it’s going to be a warm and dry day. This is because our dewy playground and field are wet and can even be muddy on warm September mornings. Teachers will let students shed layers as needed.

Students will return home wearing the same gear they wore in the morning. So they should have everything they need to repeat this process the next day. We recommend no more than once a week washes. It’s just all going to get dirty again!
