First Outdoor Mass of the Year

Sunday, May 12, will be our first outdoor Masses of the year, weather permitting. The 10 a.m. and noon Masses will be celebrated outdoors.

In the case of inclement weather, all Masses will take place inside the Chapel of Mary.

A Prayer for Outdoor Mass

Almighty and ever-loving God,

We gather to celebrate The Mass - Holy Eucharist - Thanksgiving. With gratitude, we celebrate your love given to us in the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus.

Here in this outdoor sanctuary we are surrounded by the beauty of your creation. A gentle breeze ... birds joining their song to ours.

Here in this gathering are my brothers and sisters from many cultures and places. May each of us leave this place renewed: a more fervent and faithful follower of your Son Jesus.

Amen.

Celebrating Mass Outdoors

Amid the natural beauty of this outdoor cathedral, visitors from around the world come to celebrate Mass. The Grotto is the only place in the region that regularly celebrates Catholic Mass outdoors.

Mass Schedule

The first outdoor Masses of the year begin in May. With weather permitting, the 10 a.m. and noon Masses will be celebrated outdoors in The Grotto Plaza.

Since the Beginning

Since 1924, when The Grotto was founded, Mass has been celebrated in The Grotto Plaza, in front of Our Lady's Grotto.

The Monthly St. Peregrine Mass

A monthly Mass and blessing with the relic of St. Peregrine is celebrated at The Grotto on the first Saturday of the month at 12 noon. In the warm weather months, this Mass is celebrated outside.

Special Outdoor Liturgies

Throughout the year, there are special liturgies which are held outside, such as the Feast of the Assumption in August, with a candlelight rosary procession ...

... and the Blessing of the Animals on the third Sunday in July.
