Film Screening

The Space Race

Saturday, February 10th @ 2PM

Join us in the meeting room as we watch The Space Race: the untold story of the first Black astronauts. The Space Race weaves together the stories of Black astronauts seeking to break the bonds of social injustice to reach for the stars, including Guion Bluford, Ed Dwight and Charles Bolden, among many others. In The Space Race, directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés profile the pioneering Black pilots, scientists and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth. From 1963, when the assassination of JFK thwarted Captain Ed Dwight’s quest to reach the moon, to 2020, when the echoes of the civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd reached the International Space Station, the story of African Americans at NASA is a tale of world events colliding with the aspirations of uncommon men. The bright dreams of Afrofuturism become reality in The Space Race, turning science fiction into science fact and forever redefining what “the right stuff” looks like, giving us new heroes to celebrate and a fresh history to explore. Technology Grants Galore

The Kirkwood Public Library has received several grants for technology related items this past year.

The first expanded our collection of Early Literacy iPad kits from 6 to 15. These kits come with an iPad loaded with educational games and apps for young learners.

This same grant has also provided KPL with a new 3D printer. Find more information on our website, where you can submit your own files or choose from our 3D print binder selection.

Our second grant allowed us to expand upon our in-house iPad Kiosks, installing 5 additional units in our tween space of the Children's Room. These are mounted devices that have a variety of games and apps installed for use. We now offer 11 total in-house iPad kiosks throughout the children and teen spaces in the library.

We also were able to replace 5 of our aging computers designated for searching the card catalog as well as added a few items to our Hot Technology collection.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

And be sure to look forward to our expanded Hot Technology collection - coming soon!

Pardon Our Dust

Library is currently replacing its HVAC system.

This project will occur over the next few months. As such, there will be times when certain areas of the library may become inaccessible and some services may differ from the norm. For example, the library meeting room and computers lab are unavailable for public use for the duration of this project.

During this time, we ask for your patience in order that we may continue providing the best library service to you!

Books & Beyond

Consider a visit to see what’s new this month, or peruse our collection of new and used puzzles.

Browse our collection of board books in the children’s book section and in gifts. They are perfect and durable for children 3 years old and younger. These colorful books are small and made of thick cardboard pages. It is never too early or too late to begin reading to and with your children. Board books are a great choice for parents who want to keep their children entertained while running errands or traveling.

Story Walk

Finding a safe, fun and educational activity that your whole family will enjoy may feel like a task. Leave it to the library, we've got the perfect idea!

Head over to Kirkwood Park to take a walk around Walker Lake where you can follow our Story Walk. A librarian has handpicked the book that you follow page by page around the lake until you've enjoyed a whole story and some exercise. Look for the current story: Apple and Magnolia by Laura Gehl.
